WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Online sign-up starting for Tuesday's school board meeting

Bookmark and Share

The new world of online sign-up for public comment at Wake County school board meetings begins Tuesday.

According to a district press release, you can register to speak Tuesday at the district's homepage beginning at 3 p.m. Computers will also be available for you to register in person at the school board offices at 3600 Wake Forest Road in Raleigh.

You'll have until 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday to sign up. Public comment starts at 6 p.m.

Sign up will begin 30 minutes prior to the start of the school board work session/commitee of the whole meeting and end 15 minutes prior to the start of the public comment portion of the regular board meeting.

Keep that in mind because the COW meetings may start at different times, COW starts at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday but may start earlier in the future if they've got a lot to discuss.

Tuesday marks the first attempt at starting regular board meetings at 5:30 p.m. instead of the usual 3 p.m. time. It's supposed to make it easier for people who work to attend the meetings.

Also, seat vouchers for the regular board meetings will now be distributed beginning at 3 p.m.
