WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Not requiring an IB Diploma at Broughton

Bookmark and Share

Broughton High School ducked a new requirement on Tuesday that could have sharply reduced the number of magnet applicants.

School board member Patti Head had initially proposed telling Broughton's magnet students that they'd need to take the IB Diploma Programme to stay at the school. She had been responding to concerns that a minority of the magnet students make the attempt to get an IB diploma.

That requirement was initially part of the motion that Head had proposed to keep the magnet program at Broughton.

All Broughton students take the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme in their freshmen and sophomore years. But most don't move on to the very rigorous IB Diploma Programme in their junior and senior years.

David Ansbacher, senior director for magnet programs, told Head that requirement could discourage some students from taking such academically rigorous courses.

Head agreed to drop the IB Diploma requirement from the motion.

But the board did direct staff to encourage Broughton to increase participation among magnet and base students in the Diploma Programme.

Challenge these kids

The IB Diploma Programme is similar to other AP programs where high school students can earn credits toward their university diploma. Despite the local politics, magnet students should be encouraged to participate in this type of rigorous study. All too often, brilliant minds are left unchallenged and take the path of least resistance. Why should these students be left to breeze through less strenuous curriculum?

No CHANGE......

Well, unless we get rid of most of the Wake County delegation to the State House, there will never be any CHANGE, just more of the "status quo."

One County,
Two School Systems,
ITB for the rich & elite,
OTB for the poor country folks.

How is that equal under NC Law?

(I wonder, how many senior staff at the Department of Public Instruction live "inside-the-beltline?")

Is there such a beast?

An anti-Broughton crowd? ITB and "the rich" are common local or mainstream targets, but, as such, I don't know of anyone with a beef against Broughton specifically. Out here in OTB-land, us exiles don't have the time to worry about undulations at Broughton.

Now then, how WCPSS bumps and grinds to the Broughton Beat; that's another matter; a distinctively WCPSS and BoE(eR) matter.

Facades

What I see in the recent decisions and whining of the BOE is a simple facade of the same old manure.

Number one: Get rid of the ITB magnet high schools--especially Broughton!!!! Never will happen...too much power and money concentated there!!! Gotta keep ITB happy at the expense of the rest of the county.

I mean look they won't even pave the grass for a parking lot for the kids....

Number two: Funding...wow now we have the great global financial disaster for the CC's and BOE to blame financial woes on...give me a break. The slush fund and funding from the county for this year's spending is there unless this money has been foolishly invested in derivatives. And the same is true for our bond money...we borrowed it, it is $$$$ in our pockets that we need to use to as good stewards to the education of our children.

Number three: And I can't believe I am saying this--Rock on Bev. If Broughton shouldn't be a magnet can it just like you did Lincoln Heights Elementary Magnet School (which was providing a special service to the SWD population).

Watch out for facades and smoke screens....ya'll.

The problem with getting

The problem with getting rid of the Magnets is that will get rid of any chance the kids OSB will have of going to a traditional school that has a curriculum that can compete with the top 20 states academically. It will leave the OSB kids with MYR schools or overcrowded traditional and both chooses have a curriculum that is a year behind the national average curriculum.   Instead of getting rid of the magnets have the rich part of the base moved just like what happened to Farmington woods.   I would rather see the OSB curriculum raised above the national average or at least meet it but I won’t hold my breath.

Oh i never said

Oh I never said we shouldn't have OSB magnet high schools....

There are pockets of poverty OSB, there are high schools OSB that need to be more diversified (Garner pops in my head) and reverse magnets can also be an option...

Also it is time that ALL our high schools be high calibre academic schools that offer strong vocational options....Not just the ones ITB.

Oh I love the idea of moving the rich base out of Broughton....won't happen I bet though because of politics.  One option would be diversification by choice not busing by making Broughton the first year round magnet high school.  Yup rich kids won't give up the beach house, European travel or Camp for the summer.

It is a shame, a terrible obscene shame that in the midst of all this collegiate academia our public school system is so dismal and that our students who do not graduate in honors programs are lacking nationally and worldwide.

Enough about Broughton

Enough about Broughton already.  There are plenty of other schools in Wake Co.  Why must you remain focused on this one school?  Are you hoping that with constant posts that there will eventually be an uprising among the anti-Broughton crowd?
