It's official now that no Wake County school board work session has been scheduled yet to review the new student assignment plan.
The school system has posted its schedule for next week with no work session listed. School board chairman Ron Margiotta said it would be "presumptuous" for him to schedule the work session because he'll be off the board as of Tuesday.
School board member Kevin Hill had requested that Margiotta schedule a Wednesday, Dec. 7, work session. The new majority could have gotten around Margiotta if one of the other current board members had joined Hill in making a request.
The earliest the new board could schedule a work session would be for Thursday to comply with the requirement of 48-hours advance notice. The board could try to use the Dec. 10 retreat but that would mean bypassing Superintendent Tony Tata's agenda of discussing the strategic plan.

So the NEW majority will start off where Kevin left off

Let me be the first to say, told you so!
Not Surprised
Fri, 12/02/2011 - 20:47 — jgegbgmgLooks like Margiotta is going out the way he came in - Showing no respect for the other side - He is really showing his character by not once working with Mr.Hill - Sounds like he really has a sour taste from losing his re-election and wants to be just as ugly as he can be - Hopefully the new members will learn from him and treat the new minority the way he treated the old minority - Thank heavens he is on the way out (hopefully he will head back to Jersey).
If the new members do that -
Fri, 12/02/2011 - 23:07 — nmoskalWhat do you think will happen in 4 years?
If they hold a work session on Day 2 of their tenor and start making changes how will that be viewed? Isn't that similar to actions with which people took issue with the new minority? I'm pretty sure I heard a lot of claims from the new majority during the campaign that they would govern differently. How will it look if they break that on Day 4, let alone Day 2?

“The assignment plan is very time sensitive,” Hill said. “We’ll be into the December holidays and time is short. I requested that we get our sleeves rolled up and get to work.”
Don't look for changes on student assignment to take place Dec. 6 because Hill said the new majority wants to avoid the questions that dogged the Republican board majority when members met before taking office in 2009.
While not illegal, critics accused Republicans of trying to skirt the Open Meetings Law by meeting as a group to agree on the items they presented without advance notice at their first board meeting.
Newly elected Democratic board member Jim Martin said they want to get word out about a meeting Dec. 7 or later on that week as soon as soon as possible.
"We will let the community know about the meetings well in advance,” Martin said. “There will be no surprises.”
So isn't talking beforehand about how you're going to set up a work session for the day after you're sworn in also an issue with skirting Open Meetings Law? I can't imagine that they haven't talked about set asides amongst each other already. I don't really care if they have, just pointing out that once Jim Martin was quoted in this article it became pretty obvious that at least he and Hill have talked about this work session (and probably what issues they want to bring up). I'm guessing that they talked to Kushner, Sutton, and Evans as well. Wouldn't Hill have probably confirmed with the incoming members that they could even make it to a work session that day before he would have the current board vote on it? Can't imagine he'd want to have the work session if there was a chance Evans, Kushner & Martin couldn't make it. So it makes sense that he probably discussed it with them before he asked for it. So is that also 'skirting' the open meeting law?
For the record, I'm glad that Hill asked for the work session. I'm sure I won't agree with the 'tweaks' he and the others want to put in place but there are way too many unanswered questions and issues that haven't even been addressed yet.
Add a little more of your imagination...
