WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

No candidate filings today

No one filed today to run for the school board.

With the end of the filing period less than a week away at noon July 17, several announced candidates haven't officially stepped forward yet.

Two candidates backed by the Wake Schools Community Alliance, Chris Malone in District 1 and the mystery candidate in District 9, have yet to show up at the Board of Elections. But Joe Ciulla, who is vetting candidates for the WSCA, said both people still plan to file.

Arnold Osborn hasn't filed in District 2. But you'd think he'd go through with it after having created his own t-shirts and mugs.

Lois Nixon hasn't filed in District 9. But it's only a matter of time as political strategist Perry Woods is helping her.

Perry Woods

should probably work on his "debating" skills so he can better take on Bill Lemming instead of his constant "ya' no" syndrome and let those who understand education worry about our schools!  Perry and Stan will be holding a fund raising dinner soon I'm sure!
