WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How will the new student assignment plan balance diversity, stability, proximity and stability? How will Jim Merrill replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a $810 million school construction bond referendum on Oct. 8 ballot? How will this fall's school board elections impact the future of the district?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

N&O announces school board candidate endorsements

Bookmark and Share

The N&O's editorial board announced its endorsements for Wake County school board on Friday.

The editorial board endorsed Kevin Hill in District 3, Keith Sutton in District 4, Jim Martin in District 5, Christine Kushner in District 6 and Susan Evans in District 8.

The endorsements are not handled by the News Department. The first time I saw the endorsements was when I opened the newspaper on Friday.

What is the point of this?

What is the point of this? Seriously, did anyone really wonder if the N&O would not align with the Democrat Party and every far-left-wing radical group going? Rev. Barber, NAACP, Yevonne Brannon, GSIW, CCCAAC, etc. are all interchangeable entities that share a common vision for social engineering, forced busing and a return to the failed and burdensome status quo policies of the past.

Simply fear mongering and hypocracy...

"Woodstock", time to get real my friend. Barber and others are not running for positions on the school board. Both Democrat and Republican candidates have recently and publicly acknowledged our desire for neighborhood schools. There are differences in opinion with respect to the nuances of any new assignment plan, but your repeated postings spewing nonsense to the contrary are just fear mongering.

How are Tata, Tedesco and Ronnie M's latest student assignment plan and other policies not "social engineering" also? They have introduced new discipline policies making it more difficult for students to be suspended meanwhile our kids now have to have their learning disrupted on a daily basis; single-sex schools are being created; we have more racially segregated schools now; the proposed assignment plan that is being rushed through is costly and may destroy neighborhood schools as my neighbors may not be at a base school but rather spread all over the district; math teachers' professional opinions are being disregarded in favor of statistical software and its "projections"; and Ronnie M and his majority gang on the board hired a General (with next to no educational experience) to run our public schools and with NO public input on his hiring. How is this not "social enginneering" on Ronnie M and General Tata's part?

Lastly, it is interesting to note that the General is silent when a GOP board candidate lobbies at school events yet he suddenly appears on the scene to "investigate" concerns relating to a Democrat candidate and WCPSS students that support that candidate. Is the former FoxNews contributor (Tata) demonstrating double standards? Perhaps there should be an investigation into why a GOP candidate was allowed to hand out her fliers at school events. Shouldn't someone be held accountable for that too?

Paula, "Independent, Fair & Speaking Up for MY Kids."

Thank you Paula

well said

LOL Oh, I am plenty "real."

LOL Oh, I am plenty "real." And, you and your fellow left-wing radicals will get quite a dose of reality on Oct. 11.

The choices are obvious

I thought the article and endorsements were well thought out and evidenced-based......which are tough concepts for some folks to grasp.

Now will someone please Mrs. Losurdo to stop putting campaign lit on my mailbox?

Propoganda

BD - with all due respect, you do understand the difference in weight and scope and democratic intent between a flyer in you mailbox that may present a different view vs a regional newspaper that is clearly slanted in a particular direction? Even if you disagree w Ms Losordo's msg, you seriously wouldn't want your democratic right to be informed to be 'managed for you' - would you?

I manage just fine....thank you.

And....I can determine the contrast between Mrs. Losurdo's poorly delivered propaganda....which has all the right talking points....and the reality of her true character/past action.  I don't disagree with the trite little "school choice" piece she decided to illegally hang on my mailbox. I disagree with her own words via Facebook & Tea Party Rally Video.

I notice you did not respond to my request for information as to why WCSA did not make any endorsements rather than Margiotta & Mansfield.  Perhaps that is why as a WCSA advocate (based upon previous post) you are disappointed with the N&O's endorsements which appear to be based on the contrast of the candidates rather than "Wanting a seat at the Table" and loyalty to a WCSA Board Member.

Maybe you should consider redirecting your comments to WCSA - it appears they do not feel the weight and scope of this election in 3 of the 5 districts....pity.

response

First, I agree with you about Mrs. Losurdo, so let's start with that.

"I notice you did not respond to my request for information as to why WCSA did not make any endorsements rather than Margiotta & Mansfield. "

I have a job already. You're not my task master bluedawg. Its a blog. Response or no response really means nothing other than people have other things to do.

"Perhaps that is why as a WCSA advocate (based upon previous post) you are disappointed with the N&O's endorsements which appear to be based on the contrast of the candidates rather than "Wanting a seat at the Table" and loyalty to a WCSA Board Member. "

Please don't put words in my mouth. I never said I was disappointed with the N&O's endorsements. They were expected. More water off a duck's back. The point of my post to you was that a mailer in a mail box has a different weight politically than a regional newspaper's endoresements. As for your characterizations, it seems to me you're really reaching - they're pretty thin. If that's the worst 'mud' you can sling it tells me we're doing quite well, especially considering what can be said about some of the other candidates. (ie: see first sentence of the post)

WOW, well ok then.....

I certainly did not mean to put words in your mouth....of course I am confident you did not mean to characterize my understanding between the impact of a N&O endorsement vs a mail piece as a moronic.  (just between us girls.....I was being sarcastic).

Based upon previous post it really did appear you were rather passionate about WCSA.  WCSA is made up of good folks who are passionate about doing right by our kids, Jennifer Mansfield is a good example. If you think calling someone a WCSA supporter is mud-slinging, then I want to live in the world in which you live. That was not an insult - it was an observation.  If I was wrong to read your passionate post defending WCSA and come to believe you were a WCSA supporter, my bad.

The sad thing about WCSA is that they peaked in 2009.  Now they are the former prom queen at the high school reunion after a bad marriage and gaining a few pounds....they just want to be liked.

misunderstanding

Apparently we are completely misunderstanding each other, so I'm responding one more time and then stopping.

Putting words in my mouth: regarding your statement that I was disappointed about the endorsements, not the fact that I am a member of WSCA.

Mud reference: "Wanting a seat at the Table" and loyalty to a WCSA Board Member. - I read this to refer to WSCA endorsed candidates and members.

"former prom queen at the high school reunion after a bad marriage and gaining a few pounds....they just want to be liked."  Now that was really below the belt! (lol)

Put a picture of

Put a picture of Keung on your mailbox.  That will give them a clue to save the flyer.

Maybe

I should put a picture of an illegal immigrant muslim skunk participating in the free & reduced lunch program.....from what I understand...that would be a big turn-off from Mrs. Losurdo.

Off Track Again

The blog was about the N&O endorsements but you again quickly turn it into a Lasurdo bashing event. Can't anyone stick to the topic of the blog or is each one just another opportunity to rehash the same old tired stuff?

So sorry

should we have Woody & AP get back to bashing Hui???

I found that meaningful as well.

Can't Anyone?

Please read what I wrote. I asked can't anyone (not you in particular) stay on the topic? If you'd like me to lump you in with those other knuckleheads let me know.

He's right

I worked on the news side at the N&O for more than 10 years, and I never knew what the editorial board would write or endorse.

The separation between news and editorial is real. It's why the news side can decide to run Mallard Fillmore on the comics page and the editorial board can decide to run Doonesbury on the op-ed page.

"... I never knew what the

"... I never knew what the editorial board would write or endorse."

****

Next time you're in doubt, just ask me.  I'm batting 1000.00 on "guessing". Probably just coincidence of course.   :-)

Pretty quick to deny there TKH

Why would anyone think you WERE involved Keung?  You are a crackerjack "education reporter" and whizbang blogger extrordinaire. Not an Op/Ed guy.

But since Steve "Whiffenpoof" Ford hasn't endorsed a registered Republican since Bev Perdue was in pigtails and braces, this time was no more surprising than his others over the past 18 years.

Fascinating that you felt you needed to provide an "alibi" ????
