WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

New school board members meet with RWCA

Bookmark and Share

The new school board members are reaching out to the black community to discuss the changes looming on the horizon in Wake.

New school board members Debra Goldman and Chris Malone and District 2 candidate John Tedesco met Thursday with school board member Keith Sutton and Raleigh-Wake Citizens Association President Danny Coleman.

Tedesco said new board member Deborah Prickett couldn't attend because of a scheduling conflict.

The meeting is significant considering that the RWCA didn't endorse those candidates. Sutton had organized the Oct. 5 "Friends of Diversity" press conference. Claims about resegregation of schools have been tossed around by those upset by the election results.

Tedesco described the meeting as an "open honest dialogue about how we get started."

"We are going to build a shared vision of excellence for all of our children," Tedesco said. "As I have said many times: We need to stop looking for the lines that divide us and seek out the ties that bind us. It is going to take time and we we need to build trust. But at the end of the day we all want the same thing - a rich rewarding educational opportunity that offers every child every opportunity."

Thank you!

Thank you Debra, Chris, John and I know you wanted to be there Deborah -

This is real leadership! This is what we hoped and expected and are so relieved to see from the Board of Education-to-be! Dialog, communication, reaching out, learning and growing. We need this so much. I have to agree with the Reverend on this one, though. Don't stop now! We must continue on and find a way,
find a way,
find a way..

Sent in the eNews to Enloe parents:
Mr. Sutton indicated that he wants to get to know the schools within his district. He said PLTs are positive with teachers and schools. If parents want to contact School Board members regarding the recent elections, then he advised them to be respectful.

"He said PLTs are positive

"He said PLTs are positive with teachers and schools."

"...teachers and schools?" What about with students and parents...who are the primary customers of the school system?

Ok, I feel a little bit

Ok, I feel a little bit better.... keep going though. All the rhetoric and hyperbole has me concerned that some neighborhoods will be left out in the cold.

Yep .... good start

Yep .... good start

Good for them

Sounds like a positive start.
