The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

New principals named

We've got four new principals tonight, including one for Broughton High School.

Stephen Mares will be Broughton's new principal. He's been principal of Daniels Middle School since 2005.

The start date at Broughton and the end date at Daniels hasn't been set yet.

Not surprisingly, Supt. Del Burns said there were plenty of applicants who wanted the job of running the 80-year-old school.

Moving on, Franklin Creech was named principal of the new Banks Road Elementary. He's been principal of Fuquay-Varina Elementary since 2003. His start date is Feb. 9.

Mary Warren will be the principal of the new Herbert Akins Road Elementary. She has been principal of West Lake Elementary since 2005. Her start date is also Feb. 9.

Diane Payne was named interim principal of Leesville Road High. The position has been open since Stephen Gainey was named assistant superintendent for human resources.

Payne will start Jan. 29.

She's the former longtime principal of Broughton.
