WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

New Leesville Road High principal named

Bookmark and Share

We've got some comings and goings among principals and senior administrators.

Here's one a lot of you guys have been waiting for. Scott Lyons will become principal of Leesville Road High School in North Raleigh, replacing Stephen Gainey, who became assistant superintendent for human resources.

Lyons has been principal of Ligon Middle School since 2005. He used to be a teacher and assistant principal at Enloe High.

While one high school principal came, another left.

School officials said Mike Holton resigned today as principal of Garner High, a position he had held since 2006. No reason was given for his departure.

Also today, Charles Langley was chosen to fill in as interim principal of West Lake Elementary School in Apex. The retired principal of Willow Springs Elementary replaces Mary Warren, who is now principal of Herbert Akins Road Elementary.

Mabry (Joe) Desormeaux will be the new assistant superintendent for facilities, replacing Mike Burriss, who left to take a job in the private sector. Desormeaux has been senior director for maintenance and operations since 2001.

He's also moving from being a principal at a

A lot of principals like the challenge of opening a brand new school. This means that even though it might be viewed as being a lateral move by going from one elementary school to another it's really not considered by them to be that way.

Have heard wonderful things about him.

I think this is great news for Leesville. Everything I've heard about him has been positive.

The kids at Ligon seemed to like him a lot - I know my son did. He was always at school events and what impressed me most was that he got to know many of the kids by name. I never dealt with him personally, but I didn't hear any parents complaining about him.

is it good? does anyone know anything about him?

Good news for Leesville.

Good news for Leesville. Can anyone share info on Mr. Lyons?

When will Leesville's Middle School MYR disaster be discussed?
