WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

New high school for Cary

Bookmark and Share

The school board has found where it wants to build another high school in Cary.

The school board agreed Tuesday to pay nearly $8.9 million for 88 acres near Roberts and Green Level Church roads in southwest Cary. The average price, paid out to three different property owners, is $100,695 per acre.

If county commissioners sign off on the deal and money can be found in the next bond issue, the school would open in 2012.

The only thing thats

The only thing thats excellent about this school is the extracurricular activities that they provide for the students. A lot of the teachers are there just so that they can put money in their pockets. It kind of depends on what teacher you get, becuase this school also has ... Read more a lot of great teachers that actually care. I dont see how this school is supposedly one of the top schools. To some teachers that doesnt even matter, as long they get paid. If a student is lucky they will get a teacher that will not teach them anything, and will let you pass. This is from an experienced former 9th grader

Middle Creek schools....

Middle Creek Elementary is now the largest (by population, not buidling size!) elementary in Wake County; West Lake Elementary, about 2 blocks away, is the 3rd largest elementary school population in Wake County. Both feed into West Lake Middle, also in the top 5 already of largest middle schools in Wake County. West Lake is the main feeder to Middle Creek High School....so if Middle Creek High is somewhat underpopulated now, that will change within the next few years and continue to be well -populated for the foreseeable future!
Another option for already overcrowded Apex HS and Panther Creek HS seems to be a surprisingly smart move on the part of the BOE!! Go figure!?

You see, your MCHS logic is

You see, your MCHS logic is flawed... if you are a WCPSS "predictor" ...you dont look at current figures on who has  the most over crowded elmentary and middle feeder schools... because if they did...... PCHS and HSHS wouldn't be OVERCROWDED right now with trailers taking up parking spaces waiting to be installed!

Don't you see?  There's NO PLANNING!   Panther Creek and HSHS should have been built to accomodate more kids.  There was not future planning there.  They slammed them up and put the blame on people for moving here and local governments for ALLOWING people to move here.

And besides, ... it's about balancing the FandR numbers and blending in the low teste scorers with the high acheivers to "spread" the percentages out and make WCPSS look good.

Those of us who are actually paying attention to their smoke and mirrors see they are the best illusionists around... David Blaine and that other annoying magician  guy (with the Jersy accent)  have nothing on Dulaney and Co's magic talents.

Middle Creek schools.....

Middle Creek Elementary is now the largest elementary in by population in Wake County; West Lake Elementary, across the street, is the 3rd largest. Thes 2 feed into West Lake Middle, also in the top 5 largest middle schools in the county.....If Middle Creek High is somewhat underpopulated, that will certainly change dramatically within the next few years...Another option for the overcrowding now at Apex HS and Panther Creek HS sounds like a (surprisingly!) reasonable decision - go figure?!

How close to Panther Creek is this property?

Looking at the map it looks like this property is fairly close to Panther Creek. Does anyone more familiar with this area know the distance between these two points?

I agree with all points made above regarding Apex HS. The tennis courts that are being used for PODS are so dangerous. They are located way too close to a busy road and pretty far away from the main building creating security concerns. Not to mention the loss of a popular sport. If only we had the luxury of just worrying about where we are going to park daddy's Lexus like the poor kids down at Broughton.

Chuckie D. needs to look a the elementary school overcrowding in Apex and realize that these kids are getting older. The overcrowding problem that is now at the elementary school level will soon be at the HS level. Especially at the pace that they gets things done here in Wake County.

If you do the mileage....

The new land actually is right about in the middle of Panther Creek and Apex High School.  Google Maps shows 6 miles to Panther Creek and 5.1 miles to Apex High.  So as much as I do not love the BOE I think this is a good call for this area.  It will help all the growth West of 55 in Cary and Apex south of the Cary Park, Amberly area.  Like I said I just wish it would be sooner.  So please Apex people stop calling foul, this is right on the border.

Prediction

The deal will go before the County Commissioners. The Commissioners will question the price. Betty Parker will get up and say that it's the best deal they could get and that it's urgent that the Commissioners approve the deal without delay, that if they don't, the land will be much more expensive and the district may be forced to torture a few cats.

The Commissioners will reject the purchase. 6 weeks later, Betty Parker will be back in front of the Commissioners with the same property and a lower price. This time, the Commissioners will approve the deal.

On target Bob

and that is exactly how it will happen...Bob, I couldn't have said it better myself!...you are absolutely right..it happens everytime...Bulldog Parker always gets what she wants, doesn't she Bob?...regardless of who she has to stomp on to get it! Sounds like to me Bob, you have been watching this charade for awhile...

Have a good day Bob! I enjoy reading your blogs...and sideburns, and lets not forget 'bigweenie'...lol..what a name!

I thought Cary HS is

I thought Cary HS is currently under enrolled and in the next reassignment (NOV) kids from Panther Creek were being moved back to Cary (Where they were pulled from in the first place).

Also, Middle Creek HS is supposedly under enrolled.. what gives.

I just want to know, at this new Cary HS, how much land is being purchased to put the trailers and PODS on that will arrive six months after it opens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Insane continue to run the asylum....

WHO CARES what they've

WHO CARES what they've found!

The CC's are going to have to put a freeze on EVERY THING not already underway AND there will be no bond money with voter approval next year for them to worry about!

It's a GUARANTEE! Deal with THAT Patti and Rosa!

NO BOND!

I Agree NO BOND. I think

I Agree NO BOND. I think Garner is right you need to put up with some short term discomfort to force this BOE into seeing we are seriouse. I would rather deal with overcrowding then help this BOE do anything.

Let the BOE get their money from the kid who needs to park their lexus at Broughton!!!!!

Maybe they should....

Just an afterthought, but there is a large building with parking lot currently for sale on Buck Jones Road. Perhaps a good place for the Western Wake Vocational High School? Also, on Church Street in Morrisonville, there is a large building that was built about 5 years ago -- good place for a 6 or 9th Grade center. But hey, what do residents know.

And I sure if they wait a little longer, the new Depression will bring even more real estate opportunities in Western Wake. I really hope for a bust in the construction industry that will send 1000's of workers (and their families) elsewhere. No kids means no new schools needed.

THIS IS WAKE COUNTY!!! (Think 300)

From my many years of watching the ITB School Board in action as well as WCPSS Admin, Wake County is nothing but a bunch of "nodes" to them. Multi's are NOT even considered when looking for new school locations. Hopefully by now, they do consider where new housing is being built and where the actually growth is happening. If anything, Multi's and their elected leaders are nothing more than an annoyance to the BoE(eR), except of course, the City of Raleigh.

Much Needed but a long way away

With Panther Creek way over capacity and Green Hope brimming and as mentioned above Apex High is also over capacity, this is much needed. It is right on the border of Cary and Apex, by the way if you check, so don't get tied up in knots on that.. Unfortunately I foresee reassignment next year for all the area high schools and then they will need to do again in 2012. This is always devastating to high schooler's, too bad it can't be sooner.  Of course my kid will be a Senior by then in Panther or wherever so it will not help him.

Umm...Look on a map

This location is .2 miles from the Apex/Cary border and 1 mile from 64 which is well within reach for most of west Apex where all the growth is occurring.

Apex neglected once again with seats

HELLO out there...what about Apex?  Can GM not see that Apex is in need of a new HS?  Presently we have a ridiculous amount of trailers at Apex HS.  This year, the tennis courts were taken down to make room for even more trailers.  In addition, many of our HS children are already being shipped to Cary and Holly Springs b/c there is not enough seats in Apex.  It would be nice if WCPSS would put it's bias towards aside and build a much needed HS in Apex immediately!  The numbers speak for themselves - oh, I forgot, GM never pays attention to factual numbers
