WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

New Daniels Middle principal

Bookmark and Share

We've got new principals for Daniels Middle School and Swift Creek Elementary School.

The school board just approved Elizabeth Battle as the new principal of Daniels Middle School. She replaces Stephen Mares, who is now principal of Broughton High.

Battle has been an assistant principal at Sanderson High since 2004. Here's an interesting tidbit. She's a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The new principal at Swift Creek Elementary will be very familiar. The board is promoting John R. Umstead Jr., who has been the school's assistant principal since 2000.

Umstead replaces James Argent, who is now principal of Lake Myra Elementary.

The board also officially extended Diane Payne's contract as Leesvllle Road High's interim principal to March 27. That's supposed to help ease the transition at Ligon Middle, where Scott Lyons will leave to take over Leesville.

No one has been named yet to replace Lyons at Ligon.

North Carolina history

This is one of the things I love about NC. There is so much tangible history here. I read that Rev. Chavis of Chavis Park was a Revolutionary War veteran. Its wonderful that we live in a place where folks are interested in their own personal history and its connection to our collective history. Good luck to Ms. Battle.
