The newly elected school board members are getting their orientation lessons today.
Today's meeting with staff and some board members is designed to help the former candidates learn how to be new board members when they take office Dec. 1. Along the way, they'll learn about the do's and don'ts of their new positions.
One of the challenges the new board members will face over the next few months is pressure to back off their campaign positions. While some previous board members have done 180s after taking office, that might be less likely now that the newbies form a majority instead of being in the minority.

Who leads this orientation?
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 23:57 — changewcpssWho leads this orientation? What we don't need is to teach the new members same ol' ridiculous tactics.

Did Keith Sutton out aside
Sun, 11/15/2009 - 22:20 — woodstockDid Keith Sutton set aside his antagonism toward the newly elected members and finally reach out to them at this orientation?
I have heard from a reliable source
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 15:59 — petehsthat Keith Sutton DID NOT ATTEND the orientation.
Can anyone else confirm that?
Maybe a reporter should ask

Considering the distance
Tue, 11/17/2009 - 10:23 — woodstockConsidering the distance that Sutton has placed between himself and the newly elected members, his absence was curious. Thanks for clearing it up. His excuse is certainly a valid one. I want board members who have jobs instead rich folks who don't have to work, it gives them a better perspective of the challenges working families face.

Good question!
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 01:03 — SDR256It would be interesting to know the answer.
current board was already ignoring class size
Sat, 11/14/2009 - 22:20 — stacy123Revhid - not sure if you were aware last year the board received several warning letters/reprimands for not following the procedures on class size. I believe the situation was (as it was long ago I can not remember the exact cause) WCPSS received a warnign of soemtype and a deadline to rectify which they did nothing by the deadline and then got the reprimand.
As an interim measure until new schools get built it, I beleive most people would prefer re-assignment back to neighborhood schools and they could deal with assignments on a stable, systematic way to reduce friction. Example new developments built in a current school node would not displace current students or would be guaranteed to go to 1 of 2 schools but not determined until officially appleid for enrollment. This way the options would be known in advance and presumedly less friction.
My understanding is WCPSS turned down federal stimulus money that would have paid for some teachers to stay on and keep class sizes down.- the rational was they did not want to have to lay them off in 2 years! So I think higher class sizes are here to stay for a pretty long while. Mr. Hui if you could confirm is this is correct or not I'd appreciate it.
Also, my school years always had 28-25 students and I do not recall any TA's and test scores were higher back then (my understanding is that test scores have been declining for 3-4 decades). So I am not a proponent of class sizes smaller than 28, there is a dwindling effectiveness of smaller classes and I beleive somewhere between 28 and 32 is probably ok, but I have no data to back this up just lower test scores on SAT's etc. and knowing class sizes were larger back when I was in school (70's-80's) then they are now.
Federal stimulus money
Mon, 11/16/2009 - 15:15 — NWRaleighMomKeung,
Can new board rethink the decision of declining federal stimulus money or is it too late?
It wasn't so much a case of
Tue, 11/17/2009 - 00:56 — KeungHui (author)It wasn't so much a case of declining stimulus funds as it was deciding what to do with the money received. I don't know if they can realistically modify the budget at this point in the fiscal year.
I would hope that we return
Sat, 11/14/2009 - 21:00 — RevHiDI would hope that we return to smaller class sizes soon, so I wouldn't base school capacity on the new ratios. Please don't set us up for more reassignments if we are able to get the smaller class sizes restored. Smaller class sizes are important to building the relationships that are essential to quality education. Large class sizes erode relationships just like too many reassignments. Believe it or not, I do believe that frequent reassignments hurt educational quality, even though I don't believe diversity was the primary reason for them.
Remember to make another plan for increased teacher planning time when you eliminate Wednesday afternoon planning. With staff reductions and increased class sizes, teachers have already been given lots of extra work while seeing pay decrease and health insurance skyrocket. Wednesday planning time offset that a bit. I think the new school board needs to instantly send a message that they want to support and retain quality teachers as much as possible.

orientation for the school administrators
Sat, 11/14/2009 - 00:41 — chriskennedy1i think the new board is smart enough to figure it out. Instead, let have the new school board members provide orientation for the WCPSS officers upfront to let them know of new expectations, behavior, performance, transparency, information process, etc!
the attempted brain washing will begin
Fri, 11/13/2009 - 17:59 — mike_caryI hope the desperation begins to show on the face of WCPSS status quo architechs and administrators who have cooked the books and lied to Wake County parents & taxpayers for years....

addl. training
Fri, 11/13/2009 - 14:37 — stacy123New members listen up important training on roberts rule of order:
new board member (NBM) #1 I motion to vote on a new chairman of the WCPSS Board - Ron Margiotta
NBM @'s 2, 3 and 4 (In unisom) "I 2nd the motion!"
repeat for elimination of wacky wednesday , mandatory year rounds, neighborhood schools - give parents the choice of their current school or the closest one to their house do not guarantee automatic acceeptance - give a janaury 31st deadline to see if capacity allows accomodating all parents - note use the current permissible teacher student ratio not old 25 to 1 which is built into the current capacity #'s. give parents choice on year round or traditional - unconvert as many as possible based on maximum enrollment at each school - this allows for a higher # of parents to be accomodated. Allow parents at these schools who would like to remain at year round automatically get approved at the remaining year round and at the year rounds you can not convert allow parents to opt out inot traiditonal to make room for these parents. For year round gaurantee that all fmaily members will be on the same track but no guarantee of the track as without a full track 2 they will still be under-utilized.
go for it!
