WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

New board members to speak at Taxpayers Association meeting

Chalk this up as another example of how things are changing on the school board.

The Wake County Taxpayers Association is announcing that school board candidate John Tedesco and the three newly elected school board members will speak at the group's monthly meeting on Thursday.

They'll be joined by current school board member Ron Margiotta, called "our hero" by the WCTA, and Allison Backhouse of the Wake Schools Community Alliance.

"How great it is to see the way things are shaping up to effect the changes that have been needed for so long," says former state Rep. Russell Capps, president of the WCTA, in a e-mail message announcing the meeting.

The current board members are not exactly favorites of the WCTA. Then again, critics argue that the new board won't be able to keep taxes down while also bringing about changes such as moving to neighborhood schools and ending busing for diversity and mandatory year-round schools

The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Barbecue Lodge, 4600 Capital Blvd. in Raleigh. You're told to come at 5:45 p.m. if you want to order food.
