WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

New board members at COW meeting

Bookmark and Share

The transition from campaigning to governing is moving forward on the school board.

Newly elected board member Debra Goldman and candidate John Tedesco are both at today's committee of the whole meeting. Tedesco will officiallly move into the candidate elect status as long as his supporters make sure to show up Nov. 3 to vote in the runoff.

The COW agenda is not really controversial. One of the items is a discussion of what Wake would like to change in No Child Left Behind.

Confusing

Keung,

I cannot tell if the posted WakeEd meeting is the same meeting that you are referring to in your post.

"The COW agenda is not really controversial. " What is COW?

Thanks!

COW=committee of the whole.

COW=committee of the whole. It's the 1 p.m. work session that the board holds before the 3 p.m. regular board meeting.

Thank you!

Thank you!

What?

WakeED? The people -- including leader Ann Denlinger -- who just weeks ago stood with the folks demanding continued forced busing and reassignments now wants to hold a forum on choice...and have you pay for the privilege? Amazing!

I hope some of you are planning to go and share your opinion

From a parent's point of view, public school choice in Wake County boils down to magnet school options, a student's assigned school or a nearby charter school. This presentation looks at the enrollments, academic achievement levels and the history of magnet and charter schools in the county. Originally presented as part of the 2009 Leadership Institute for school board candidates, it offers a wealth of detail about the school choices parents make for their children.
