WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

New board majority and Supt. Burns

Bookmark and Share

While some of you guys want the new school board majority to get rid of Supt. Del Burns, it wouldn't be cheap or easy.

As noted in today's article, buying out Burns' contract would mean paying him 18 months of salary, or $409,500. The alternative is firing him with cause, which is essentially a trial that would be expensive as well.

School board member Ron Margiotta said he hopes Burns will stay on to implement the changes that will be made. He said he personally likes Burns.

The alternative is for Burns, who is under contract through June 2013, to choose to leave. But he said he could work with the new board and carry out its policies.

"I started working here in 1976,” Burns said in the article. “If there are changes, I'll work through them.”

But Margiotta said he expects staff to carry out the new policies and not block them.

“If our staff can't get the work done, we'll get people who can,” Margiotta said in the article.

I think that Chuck is under contract too, isn't he? I'd like for them to both be gone, but Chuck's elitist attitude towards low income families is appalling.

'nuff said. Chuck has lied and been protected for far too long. Next step is finding staff who care about education over social engineering.

Seems like a discount

Burns is a superintendent of an "Award Winning" school system, surely he has many options available to him...from other systems that may not bother to look beneath the surface.

Things change

The guy never had oversight before -- merely an echo chamber. Who knows what Mr. $400k can produce when held accountable?

What's more interesting to me is what happens to Chuck.

What they can do with their golden parachute

I'd like them to put their money where their school bus is.  They need to buy a home in Southeast Raleigh.  If they "live" diversity for a while, maybe... maybe I'd listen to them.

I'm guessing they'll move to white bread, lib Chapel Hill.  Libs sure love diversity!

I wish Chuck moved to

I wish Chuck moved to Chapel Hill/Carrboro school district. There is a lot of work to be done to merge with Orange County. Just can't wait to see the reaction of his liberal buddies at UNC :-)

Sounds like a win-win

It seems that would be good match.
