The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system: the reassignment of thousands of students, the conversion of traditional-calendar schools to a year-round schedule, the district's response to growth and the school construction program.
WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.
The school board filled a newly created area superintendent's spot on Tuesday.
Andre Smith will become the first area superintendent for Northeastern Wake. He's been principal of Wake Forest-Rolesville High School since 1997.
The board created the slot after it promoted Danny Barnes to lead area superintendent in May.
Previously, Barnes had been the area superintendent for Eastern Wake.
To ease Barnes' workload, the board reduced the number of schools he oversees. Smith will help fill up the slack.
The board had budgeted the creation of two new area superintendents because it felt that each person had too many schools to oversee.
Also on Tuesday, the board named Cathy Moore the new area superintendent for Central Wake. She has been principal of Sanderson High School in North Raleigh since 2000.
Moore is replacing the retiring Jonibel Willis.

So how much more.....
Thu, 10/23/2008 - 10:40 — WuptdoSo how much more is this going to cost the tax payer in Wake County, including the additional support staff? The bloated bureaucracy of WCPSS is sickening. Just another reason why we should give the City of Raleigh its school system back.
Yeah, that can staff this
Wed, 10/22/2008 - 22:30 — H2OGuyYeah, that can staff this jobs and do nothing for the teachers but more and more paperwork, more and more responsiblities and with no support. They cut back on supply money, but the county sure can come up with money to pay another area supt.1ooK+ a year. So sad.

Wed, 10/22/2008 - 19:59 — Anonymous (not verified)OMG! I guess since the records are sealed they don't have to worry about any embarrassing secrets coming to light about their superintendent selection.
another layer of bureaucracy
Wed, 10/22/2008 - 14:36 — fiestamomOh goody, another layer of unresponsive bureaucracy next time there's a problem.
More of the Same
Wed, 10/22/2008 - 10:13 — joeciullaYet another example of how arrogant our school board has become. Companies all over the triangle are laying off people and reducing their executive ranks, WCPSS continues to name new executives. They are no better than AIG... keep those executives happy and ask for bailouts when you need them.

Thanks for that answer though!
Too big
Wed, 10/22/2008 - 09:51 — Tammy (not verified)I heard the news last night at the WFRHS.At first I thought Mr.Smith was going to be replacing someone that would be retiring. As can read that is not the case. Therefore it just shows that if a new postiion has to be created then the district is way too big. There should be now 7 smaller local districts.
And the Empire continues to grow
Wed, 10/22/2008 - 08:26 — Anonymous (not verified)As the rest of America is downsizing in the face of a recession this monster of a school system continues to grow with yet another layer of management.

Wed, 10/22/2008 - 08:20 — shearertwOK...we can afford to have area superintendents, why not just go ahead and make area boards and do away with the WC board, sup, etc?
