WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Bookmark and Share

Tonight, the youth side of the protest movement against the Wake County school board takes center stage.

NC Heat (Heroes Emerging Amongst Teens) will make a pitch for people to attend Tuesday's march protesting the end of the diversity policy in Wake County. The meeting will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough St. in Raleigh.

NC Heat was founded by the same students who formed the Student Army of Wake County group.

I'm about to think most "law-yers" are sleezebags......it's that "if you can't beat em, join em" thing, I guess...money's just too darn good apparently, whether it's "good money" or "bad money."

According to  the Student

According to  the Student Army of Wake County facebook page, with its militant logo, a vast majority of its members are from ... drum roll .... William G. Enloe High School. Is anyone even a little bit surprised by that?

False.

NC HEAT Is comprised of ten students, 2 from Enloe, 3 from S.E. Raleigh High, 1 from Cary High, 1 From Athens Drive, 1 from Broughton, 1 from Greenhope, and one from Garner.

Are those "magnet people?"

Are those "magnet people?"

10 out of 140,000

Yes we should listen to these 10 out of 140,000. What is that about .00007% of students in Wake County.

We are represented by a

We are represented by a charismatic minority. As a highschooler, and someone who is very involved in this issue, I don't think it matters that only a few of us choose to represent the rest. It does not change our message, or the data that supports our views.

I wouldn't normally respond, but these are my peers your talking about, and they don't have the ability to speak in this particular argument.

Andrew Snee, rising 10 grader at Broughton High, not a member of NC heat.

Why not?

Why wouldn't you normally respond? If you can defend your viewpoint, do it here.  If you do so well, you'll be taken seriously.  If not, well, then you won't.

You represent Yourself

Andrew you can speak for yourself don't assume everyone else thinks as you do. My children are also in high school and disagree with your point of view. Please continue to share your view, just don't assume you speak for everyone. Even if you are in the minority speak your mind and remember things don't always go your way.

The majority, yes.

The majority, yes.

I think it is common

I think it is common knowledge that some of these organizations are umbrellas for magnet people, ITB homeowners, etc. It is a motley mix of valid and questionable views marketed as a 'diversity' package.

Magnet people stick together.

Magnet people stick together.

LOL you actually have a

LOL you actually have a sense of humor... you may have noticed that the opposite ends repel.

But we have a lot of pull

But we have a lot of pull and we never loose our bearings.......

You mean pull in a lot of

You mean pull in extra resources and never lose them. Nice metaphor.

Something like that...
