WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system as it prepares to undergo historic changes. Will the new school board scrap the diversity policy in favor of neighborhood schools? Will year-round schools be converted back to a traditional calendar? How will the new board respond to  growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

National union endorses Wake school board candidates

Bookmark and Share

A national labor union has stepped into the Wake County school board elections to endorse candidates and fling barbs at SEANC head Dana Cope.

UNITE HERE, which represents hospitality and textile workers, issued a press release today endorsing Rita Rakestraw in District 1 and Karen Simon in District 7 for their support of Wake's school diversity policy.

UNITE HERE said it felt "morally obligated to get involved" because Cope, executive director of the State Employees Association of N.C., and Ardis Watkins, legislative director of SEANC, had formed the Children's PAC to back candidates who support neighborhood schools. They said Cope and Watkins "have done their union and the union movement a real disservice."

The Children's PAC officially shut down last week. But the group plans to work with the Wake Schools Community Alliance in the school board races.

Here's the press release:

Hospitality Union to Support Two Wake County School Board Candidates Who Back School Diversity Policies

UNITE HERE, North America’s hospitality, food service, laundry, airport and textile union has announced two endorsements in a North Carolina school board election.

The UNITE HERE TIP Campaign Committee will support two Wake County school board candidates in the October 6 election: Rita Rakeshaw in District 1 and Karen Simon in District 7.

UNITE HERE believes these candidates best embody the principles of democratic pluralism that are essential for a vibrant public education system, and that they will vigorously defend Wake County’s celebrated diversity program to ensure that all children in the county have equal access to high-quality education regardless of their location or socio-economic status.

UNITE HERE, which has 265,000 members in the U.S. and Canada including several thousand in North Carolina, decided to get involved in the Wake County election because of the importance of maintaining Wake County’s diversity policies.

“We believe that Wake County’s diversity policies are important for working families in North Carolina,” explained UNITE HERE spokesperson Marty Leary. “Recently, we heard that two high-ranking officials from SEIU had formed a PAC with the express purpose of defeating candidates who supported Wake County’s celebrated diversity policies, and we felt morally obligated to get involved.”

Dana Cope, the Executive Director of the State Employees Association of North Carolina (SEANC) and Ardis Watkins, SEANC’s Legislative Director, formed the “Children’s PAC” earlier this year after their efforts to stop the county schools’ reassignment plan were unsuccessful.

Cope and Watkins live in an affluent West Raleigh neighborhood that is located in one of three nodes scheduled to be reassigned from Lacy Elementary to Stough Elementary.

The two SEIU officials have announced plans to dissolve their PAC and ally themselves with another anti-reassignment group, the Wake Schools Community Alliance (WSCA), which has endorsed three candidates for the Wake school board.

“Working families, and especially SEANC members, must be wondering what in the world Cope and Watkins were thinking when they inserted themselves into this election,” Leary said. “Cope and Watkins have done their union and the union movement a real disservice by associating themselves with those who want to overturn forty years of progress in Wake County and dismantle one of the most successful and diverse school systems in the United States.”

UPDATE

Here's Cope's response to the press release:

"Obviously UNITE HERE, which is a Washington D.C. union, has no clue with what's going on in Wake County," Cope said. "The Wake County school board is not progressive in its policies. It's deterimental to families."

Cope gave the example of Southeast Raleigh children being bused to Brier Creek Elementary in northwest Raleigh. He said Brier Creek was too far away for his SEANC members in Southeast Raleigh to be involved at the school.

WakeEd, with its 501(c) 3 and IRS standing now being scrutinized, has put together an impressive array of community ‘leaders’ and elected officials. But what is their current and future goals?

interesting

My friend from Rochester, NY wrote: 'they're a pretty powerful union here in Rochester--I didn't realize they were so large. Haven't seen them get involved in politics here either."

So - why all the interest in Wake County politics? Still waiting for that answer to my note to them.

United Here states: "...to

United Here states: "...to ensure that all children in the county have equal access to high-quality education regardless of their location or socio-economic status."

If this is indeed true, why endorse Simon and Rakestrw? It makes no sense at all. These candidates want to continue the status quo that has produced wildly unacceptable graduation rates for many minority and economically disadvanted student populations.

It is Goldman, Prickett, Malone and Tedesco who are demanding that all children receive a high quality education. These four highly-qualified candidates are fighting for change that will make a dramatic difference in the educational success of every student in Wake County. Instead of bus rides...which solve nothing, they are proposing programs to specifically address the challenges that are holding some students back and putting up barriers to their success.

....

so, I emailed these here Unite folks, asking WHY in the world they are bothering with a County school board election.....no response yet....

Me too.  I used the online

Me too.  I used the online form on their website.

I'm not holding my breath waiting for a response.

I believe there is a bonus

I believe there is a bonus in store for any SAS employee willing to sell their soul and vote for the status quo. On the flip side there is a pink slip for anyone voting against status quo. Don't believe it? Check for yourself.

Just sayin'.

Any employee willing to disclose

that to the public or any media outlet would be in line for a nice reward.  Post verifiable proof that's happening here and there could even be a live goat in your future.  You would never have to cut grass again!  Just think of the possibilities!

Is management there talking

Is management there talking about this election or making any suggestions on how to vote?

Report: Triangle among most educated areas of U.S.

http://news14.com/content/school_news/615035/report--triangle-among-most...
RALEIGH -- Triangle residents rank near the top in the nation when it comes to education.

The Triangle Business Journal reports that information released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows the Triangle region has the third highest percentage of adults with at least a bachelor's degree.

The census bureau includes Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Harnett, Johnston, Orange, Person and Wake counties in the Triangle region.

With all that education at

With all that education at home, WCPSS has to work really hard to stay mediocre.

..

sad, isn't it?  and look how many counties that had to be added to the Triangle to get "us" there.....hmmm

...

wow, that header line is really dark, isn't it?

Header

It would work better with either white or black text on the header bar, but there I am being racist again.

follow the money

this is strange - there must be much more to this race than educating children (I mean business development tools)

wow, does anyone else find

wow, does anyone else find this particularly strange? just so I understand, Dana Cope pi$$ed off someone somewhere and now some goombahs from DC are going to back, Clueless and Tink??? I'd be ROFLMAO if this didn't reek so bad.

Tink!

Let me guess who that is.  Oh that's a good one.  And welcome back blog.

...

Let me make sure I have this straight....

A national labor union has endorsed a Wake County school board candidate? Is there an actual name attached to this endorsement? Preferably a name of someone who actually lives in Wake County, preferably one who understands the workings of our school system.

This reads more like a dig at Dana Cope than an actual endorsement. Embarrassing.

I wonder what the union's

I wonder what the union's membership thinks about this. I assume the time, effort and money used to make the endorsements are funded by member contributions. How does the union leadership explain to members that their contributions are being used to finance a cat fight with Dana Cope? Seems entirely unethical to me.

DISGUSTING! If anyone

DISGUSTING!

If anyone believed the school board race was not political, this should set you straight. So much for this race being about ideas for addressing educational issues in Wake County.

Come again??

Claude Pope, Jr.- Wake Co GOP head called me today to urge my voting in the OCt 6 elctions, especially for the endorsed conservative BOE candidates as found on the Wake GOP website.

This is old news.. are your drugs just wearing off from Woodstock?

"Wake" GOP. Get it? "Wake"

"Wake" GOP. Get it? "Wake" is the operative word here. Their members live, pay taxes and have a stake in what happens in WAKE COUNTY. They are not a national union with no presence in Wake County and no clue to what the issues are. There is a gigantic difference.

Prickett, for instance, is unaffiliated, the GOP is backing her because of her common sense, forward-thinking, and fact-based ideas. The union in question has no clue to what those ideas even are and is acting with purely political motives.

How About Interviewing the Candidates?

All these 'endorsements' like the N&O and this organization have never even spoken to the candidates that are running (at least not the ones they aren't endorsing).  Because of that these endorsements are worth less than the paper they are written on.  I smell the status quo group getting scared!  How else would this group know about our little old election here in Raleigh?

Good golly

Now some national labor union wants to drag the future of Wake County's children into some sort of apparent fight between their union and SEIU? If you click on the UNITE HERE it takes you to their website, which has a link to an anti-SEIU page (i.e. they seem to have some personal beef with Cope and Watkins). Fab.

BTW the Locals listed as Raleigh have Durham and Fayetteville addresses, so do they even have members in Wake County?

Its all for the children, didn't you know?

You had no idea your children were such important political pawns until all this did you? I didn't.

Nope and didn't realize children were a business development

tool either. It's really getting sickening.

Well, gotta run and pick up my business development tools and political pawns.

make sure you don't kill the

make sure you don't kill the goose that laid the golden egg

Egg face

I wanna see that damn golden egg all OVER their faces!

No unions in NC

News flash. We don't adhere to unions in NC. It's against state law.

So those paying attention

So those paying attention can clearly see that Simon and Rakestraw have no idea what they are talking about. They are clueless as the issues in WCPSS, of which there are many. These two, especially, are getting blown away in the debates and forums yet these huge, left leaning organizations continue to get behind them. These two make Bush look like Warren Buffett!
So the elite leftist only like intellectuals when they're towing their line. Be smart, innovative and disagree with them and they'll support what ever dummy they can find to stand in front of a microphone and read from the script.

Another toilet paper endorsement

comes to town via a group of thugs, backroom dealers and clueless wonders!  This non-factor group's backing of Simon and Rakestraw should demand an investigation!  It's clear that groups such as this, WEP and some local media "cult" outlets have come together to push these clueless status quo candidates into this race and provide them with propaganda and talking points to try and give them the appearance of understanding our education system.  It's called "puppet syndrome"!  However, every time Simon, Rakestraw and Nixon open their mouths it obvious they have no clue what is happening around them and are being fed the info from people like Stan, Perry and the other mentioned groups to "take siege" of our education system and local economy via manipulation!  Conspiratorial?  I don't think so.
Ann Dingaling stated yesterday that her worthless group is here to provide answers to business people about our education system.  The "truth" is how I believe she worded it.  The truth Ann?  REALLY???  So were you calling WSCA liars because you think their facts are not correct????  Are you calling us parents and voters liars because we don't believe your BS?  I don't even think you believed your own BS as it rolled off your tongue!
What about you Jennifer Lanane, do you think Ann's facts are the truth or do you think everyone else's facts are correct?
Oh I'm soooooooooooo waiting on the Goodnight's endorsement to complete the status quo cake.  Come on guys, your turn!
