WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Naming Rolesville's new school

Bookmark and Share

Does the school board owe it to Rolesville to name a new middle school after the town?

As noted in today's North Raleigh News article, Rolesville town leaders have urged the school board to use "Rolesville Middle School" for the site on Burlington Mills Road. County commissioners have credited Rolesville leaders with helping acquire the property.

"They need to work with us in the naming of schools,” said Rolesville Mayor Frank Eagles in today's article. “It’s the people’s schools, not the school board’s schools.”

Town leaders helped negotiate more advantageous terms with the seller and chipped in part of the purchase price when commissioners rejected the initial deal.

Click here for the three choices being considered by the school board. Administrators said yesterday they're backing using "Rolesville Middle School. "

The vote is scheduled for Tuesday.

How 'bout Northern Wake Balanced Middle ?

"Knowing that Bryan hails from Knigthdale, Dulaney said they can't reduce the F&R percentages in Eastern Wake schools without busing low-income students to Northern Wake and bringing in affluent students from there. Since that would make the distance too far to travel, Dulaney said that's why they're focusing on maintaining schools with comparable demographics."

Since when has distance been a busing issue to ChuckD?

Dumb... just dumb

Yes, is that not the dumbest thing ever... Holly Ridge Middle School in Holly Springs! They did it because it is next to Sunset Ridge and is on Holly Springs Road. Forget that there's actually a Holly Ridge NORTH CAROLINA! Duh.

I think my favorite WCPSS name is Carnage.

Well, they are building a new middle school in HS and they I hear they are proposing to name that one Holly Springs Middle School although it's next to Holly Grove Elementary School. So they may name it Holly Grove Middle School, but it's still next to Holly Springs High School. Go figure.

I don't get why they can't say HSMS East and HSMS West. Or name it after the former landowner or something Jones Middle School in Holly Springs or Smith Middle School in Holly Springs.

VOR... I think you should be in charge of naming! You have the best ideas!- Millberg Middle of the Road... LOL.

It's just another symptom if the "self indulgent don't know what we are doing" syndrome this BOE (er) perpetuates!

How 'bout.....

How 'bout Milburg Mediocre Middle?

Isn't this nonsense the reason why the first ES in Holly Springs was named Holly Ridge ES? These folks have DEEP psychological issues....

What's in a Name

How about the Lori Millburg Middle of the Road School or the Soon to have Trailers Middle School. Tammy, community involvement and WCPSS has no meaning unless you live inside the beltway.

[Sorry for being sooooo cynical]

School Names

If they name it Rollesville Middle School then they can rename the other middle school,Wake Forest Middle School!

It is too bad the town doesn't get to vote and name their schools .i feel it helps develop community involement.

oh no..they are not your schools

I specifically remember Bev Clark getting very angry at a Garner town leader because they wanted to name one of their new schools. Clark said - almost exactly (go back and find the minutes for wording ) that if WCPSS "allows" towns to get "involved" in naming schools, that takes away "their control" and it will be chaos.

I remember this so well because soon after that, she went off on a rage about how she's fed up that towns are not made to help off set the costs of road improvements in front of the schools.

She wants her cake, and her icing and all the candles too!

So, Mayor, make no mistake... that is NOT your school! WCPSS will remind you of that everyday, sir.  It belongs to THEM, not to the parents, not to the PTA, not to the town, not to you, not to the taxpayers... THEM!

school name

I like "rolesville middle", but there is already "wake forest-rolesville middle" . . . would that be renamed?

Wake Forest-Rolesville

As noted in the article, staff has suggested that if they go with "Rolesville MIddle," they rename Wake Forest-Rolesville to avoid confusing the two schools.
