As voters continue to cast their ballots in the District 2 runoff, the state NAACP is sending a message it won't be going away after Election Day.
In a statement sent this afternoon, the Rev. William Barber, the head of the state NAACP, said they don't see the runoff as an "end all." Barber said they'll reviewing the policies of the new school board to see if they lead to resegregation.
"After today’s election, the constitution, the promise of equal protection, will be the tools of interpretation by which we critique the policy of not only the Wake County School Board but every school board in the state," Barber said in the statement. "When and if the policies run counter of the fundamental promises of the constitution, we will be prepared to agitate, legislate, and if needed litigate on behalf of our children."
Barber says that the neighborhood school message promoted by the new board members is "not economically feasible." He said it will lead to a situation where the best schools are only in certain neighborhoods with other areas not benefitting from housing, jobs and business development.

If you want a place at the table in a discussion, you need to speak respectfully with the decision makers and show a willingness to engage in rational dialogue. Instead, Mr. Barber chooses to pre-judge imagined policies when no proposals have yet been made, call names, and race bait.

Barber is irrelevant ...
Tue, 11/03/2009 - 20:50 — sky5714and so is the NAACP. No more will they rule by intimidation, bullying, and disinformation.
Go back to the Golden Corral buffet "Rev" Barber - you were of no help to "your" people before this election - and you surely will be of no help in the future. In fact why don't you give up that hefty salary & get out in the community & really help some kids.
No more playing the race card - that tired old excuse will not work anymore. Parents who love their children take responsibility for the education of their children & get involved with the education system - regardless of race, ethnicity, or culture.

Tue, 11/03/2009 - 19:20 — dryeraseuserIt's just pittyful just how stupid and ignorant this man is. I say LET HIM say all these things. He just digs his hole deeper and deeper. He isn't a leader for the advancement of colored people...he's a leader that is setting them back further and further. We need to know that the majority of the population, pays this man, NO mind along with his organization.

Yep - just like we've been doing all these years! Just like any parent, teacher, and every other citizen wants to do!
Amen!
