The Wake County school system is trumpeting changes that have tripled the number of schools in Newsweek's latest list of the top U.S. public high schools.
Back in June, only four district schools made Newsweek's list. But following complaints from Wake, Newsweek recalculated the data and 12 schools are now on the list of 1,735 schools.
“We have great schools in Wake County, and we want to make sure they get the credit they deserve,” said David Holdzkom, Wake's assistant superintendent for evaluation and research, in a district press release today. Our teachers, administrators and principals have worked hard for these results.”
The new schools added to the list are Panther Creek High at No. 948, Athens Drive High at No. 1192, Cary High at No. 1492, Middle Creek High at No. 1544, Millbrook High at No. 1583, Holly Springs High at No. 1627, Apex High at No. 1668 and Leesville Road High at No. 1730.
The changes helped lower the rankings of the original Wake schools on the list. Enloe High went from 127th to 128th. Broughton High went from 300th to 305th. Green Hope High went from 458th to 477th. Wakefield High went from 1138th to 1213th.
