WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How will the new student assignment plan balance diversity, stability, proximity and stability? How will Jim Merrill replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a $810 million school construction bond referendum on Oct. 8 ballot? How will this fall's school board elections impact the future of the district?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

More than 100 speakers today

Bookmark and Share

Here's the post for you guys to comment on the 106 people who've signed up to speak at today's Wake County school board meeting.

The questions is how long school boar chairman Ron Margiotta will allow comment to go before cutting it off. Based on the turnout, Margiotta said he's reducing the speaking time from three minutes a person to two minutes a speaker.

But even at just two minutes a speaker, we're looking at three hours and 42 minutes of comments.

As a sign of how large the crowd is, people are standing in the hallway because the board room is full. For the first time in recent memory, Raleigh police officers and Wake County sheriff's deputies are providing security at the meeting.

UPDATE

Update at 7 p.m. Afer 54 speakers, publlc comment has been stopped by Margiotta with 47 left to go.

The school board has just come back from a 10-minute recess after Curtis Gatewood, 2nd vice president of the state NAACP, refused to stop speaking.

It was a heated exchange by Gatewood, who accused the school board members of being racists during his public comments.

“If you expect to go to hell, don’t take our childen with you," Gatewood said.

Margiotta gavelled him out of order saying he was offended, leading to another shot by Gatewood.

“If you’re a white racist, you should be offended.” Gatwood said, drawing cheers.

When time ran out, Margiotta told him to stop speaking. But Gatewood refused, saying he had been interrupted.

Poilce approached him with Margiotta calling a recess. The Rev. William Barber, state NAACP president, interceded for Gatewood, saying Margiotta hadn't interrupted anyone else.

After the recess, Margiotta gave him 30 more seconds. On Gatewood's way out, he was cheered by the crowd.

I don't think it's active

I don't think it's active but just got a text that Ron is calling his opponents "animals coming out of their cages"???

Yep -- it was on the live

Yep -- it was on the live feed.  He made the remark under his breath to the other board members as he looked out over the crowd but the microphones picked it up loud and clear.

Keung, Bueller, Anyone......

I cannot get the feed on my computer from WRAL, but I just read updated blog on WRAL of the board meeting. When referring to the coversions and YR applicants, it said that "Staff said"...Heritage middle may have too many applicants to seat. Did anyone hear that who is watching. I have tried to get my son in that school for two years with no luck...I thought that all applicants were being accepted regardless of overcrowding as long as you applied during the application period. (That is what the resolution they passed said) Did anyone hear discussion on that? A little confused here at home. Any one out there that can help?

...

J,

I was at the meeting today and did hear that comment. It was from Laura Evans (who apparently is doing Dulaney's job now). There was no further discussion about it because final applications numbers were not complete yet. If I were you, I would ask my Board rep for further info.

Hope that helps.

Sideburns..

Thank you,

 that does help!

"Here come the animals out of their cages?"

This comment came from board chair, Ron Margiotta, during public comment time at today's board meeting. He should be ashamed and he should resign. This is completely unacceptable....this was followed a few moments later by his stopping a speaker for being "disrespectful"....Unbelievable.

Ron did very audibly  refer

Ron did very audibly  refer to "animals out of their cages."  But couldn't tell from camera to whom he referred.

Margiotta's comments

I heard it clearly...had to play it back a couple of times, because I couldn't believe my ears.  He was apparently talking about those who were opposed to the previous speaker (the guy running for office and who spoke in favor of the current board policies).

5:00 sound bite

Well, the media has the sound bite they were looking for. Did they take the guy out kicking and screaming? He did get a little out of line, but Ron did take his time. ANd yes, Randall did scream - and probably went over his time.

PS: Congratualtions Leesville

A tour de force of rational

A tour de force of rational comment from parents, republicans, former 16 year board member John Gilbert (who was cut off), a Former Greensboro and Montgomery Alabama Super, conservative business people, all saying act in the interest of achievement, and children, not voters. Live up to oath and make data based decisions.

After about 10 speakers, first sign wielding 'New Board' supporter (are signs a talking point? :-) to speak was Bill Randle, who did nothing but scream about segregation, and made no sense. Followed by another 'New' Board supporter whose essentially message was, 'keep those poor kids away from us.'

I will give props to Allison Backhouse. She made valid points that 'diversity' is not the problem, but some of the impacts 'diversity first' have brought are. While I do not agree with her entirely, her comments were made rationally. At the end our children need us to figure out a way that we can come together and find compromise to support our schools together, rather than continuing down an ideological path that will tear our schools apart.

Has anybody noticed that, in

Has anybody noticed that, in general, the people who support the new board are much more polite and observant of the rules for presenting to the board than those in the opposition?

Yeah, But The Nastiness On Your Side

doesn't need to come from the *audience* - Margiotta has it covered from the damn *podium*.

ROTFLMAO

Woodstock, are you KIDDING me?  Do you not recall how "pleasant" the opposition used to be the previous board?  They are now the victors and are clearly rejoicing.  I'm happy LES was returned to traditional, but let's be real here.

It's so easy to be polite and pleasant when you're getting your way.  The true test of character comes under adversity.  Neither side should be offering themselves as a paragon of virtue here!

I am not kidding or making

I am not kidding or making comparisons, I was making an observation. I understand that emotions can run high, but it does not change the fact that the opposition is angry and apparently has no concerns about expressing it. I am not sure why they think it will help their case, however.

It helped our case

Come on, these are the basics of human psychology.  Do you really not understand why people who are frustrated think expressing that frustration may help win minds and hearts?

Obtuse!  And also smug.  Like I said, I'm just as happy that LES was converted as you, but I'm plainly more of a realist.

You disagree with my

You disagree with my observation, so now you want to insult me? I don't get it. Is that an attempt on your part to win my mind and heart?

There is a time an place to express frustration -- these blogs may be one -- it is not when when you are in front of people you wish to convince to see things your way. Basic human psychology tells us that when you are confrontational the very people you are attempting to sway will recoil and tune you out. This very senario played out in today's meeting.

LOL

Coming from you, that's laughable.

Look, we're on the same side, I just don't like how you go about it.  You have zero sympathy for the opposition even though a very short time ago, we were in their shoes.  You think you are right and you frequently belittle people on the other side.

However, I should not have stooped so low, and apologize for insulting you.

I don't understand what your

I don't understand what your issue is.

As I listen to more insulting rhetoric from the opposition, I am left wondering why you defend the the "frustration" the opposition is spewing or why you expect me to accept it and understand it.

....

OT...

I see Dallas Woodhouse on my live stream right now. How is that possible woodstock? Tongue out

Nope, haven't noticed that

Nope, haven't noticed that at all.   But I did notice Ms. Goldman and Mr. Margiotta being arrogant and snide earlier to the non-majority.

Really, so the fact that

Really, so the fact that someone from the opposition essentially called the board members "white racists" and security had to get involved does not suggest a certain amount of impoliteness to you. How do you expect to maintain any credibility when you say stuff like that?

Based on the time stamp of

Based on the time stamp of the post, that guy probably hadn't come up to speak when it was typed.

Yep -- but Woodsy (who has

Yep -- but Woodsy (who has acknowledged he isn't getting the feed) doens't bother to get the facts.

I never said I was not

I never said I was not getting the feed. Why make things up?

look familiar (it's in this

look familiar (it's in this thread)

Woodstock

I cannot get the feed on my computer from WRAL, but I just read
updated blog on WRAL of the board meeting.

What? You are apparently

What? You are apparently confused. That post was clearly written by J8307200, as you even demonstrate in your own post.

Do you know what this means:

I was wrong and apologize

I was wrong and apologize for my error.

No worries. I am sure there

No worries. I am sure there are plenty of other things I will say that you can fault in. Smile

Gatewood was just one

Gatewood was just one example. But, others in the opposition were clearly insulting, spoke past ther time limit, and one lady actually threatened the board members with a law suit.

Actually, she didn't

Actually, she didn't threaten a lawsuit.  I think she threatened a criminal complaint.

Well now, that doesn't

Well now, that doesn't really change my point does it?

It should.  If a

It should.

If a prosecutor says that your actions (or inaction) could potentially result in criminal charges, and then explains to you why, that is usually cause for a little concern.

The details of a baseless

The details of a baseless threat don't change the fact that it is a baseless threat.

You can the threat to heart and see where that gets you.

Which may well be deserved

Which may well be deserved given their imprudent, ill-informed, rash, arrogant actions.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

I see you are choosing the

I see you are choosing the irrational approach. So much for a real conversation. Have a nice day.

Seriously?   You, of all

Seriously?   You, of all posters here, are going to try the "real conversation"  argument?

 Get real.

FYI -- my apology for my error in the other post holds.

Woodstock,

I don't know the answer as I

I don't know the answer as I am only listening to it on and off.

Thanks anyway

I will repost up top see if anyone else heard.  They really had to pull someone out who called the board white racist?

Wow....................

They didn't pull him

They didn't pull him out.   They actually called a recess instead then gave him 30 more seconds after the resource as Mr. Margiotta had ever so impolitely interrupted him with allowing him his full two minutes.   The guy was telling them off but he is allowed his two minutes to state his position whether the board likes that position or not.

Yes, Margiotta did

Yes, Margiotta did appropriately interrupt him during is diatribe in which he called people "white racists" and suggested they were going to hell.

Are you defending Gatewood's words and actions?

I just ate my popcorn and

I just ate my popcorn and watched in amazement.    Someone asked, I told them what I saw.

How do you feel about Margiotta's crack about "the animals"?

How do you feel about Gatewood

How do you feel about Gatewood calling those who disagree with him "white racists"?

One person is a speaker, the

One person is a speaker, the other is the chairman of the board.  I'm not sure they should be held to the same standard.

I thought both of them were out of line.

I'm still pondering whether

I'm still pondering whether I thought it was accurate or not.  How about you?

He's a phenomenal representative

for groups like Barber's big bag of wind, CACACACAAACCCCCCC, del's merry army, The Enloe Pirates, Brannon's status quo gang of 4, The everything cost 15 million $ gang, and everyone else who thinks like these people do isn't he.

Just wow!  I hope they locked him up!

In other news, way to go Leesville, and others, CONGRATS!  Now can you help the rest of us achieve that goal. Wink

who is your BoE rep for your

who is your BoE rep for your MYR?

No

I only notice that they are few in number.

Ron's Interesting comment

Very interesting how Ron referred to "letting the animals out of their cage" after a black man spoke. Hmmm....??

I don't know what you are

I don't know what you are suggesting, but that black man, you are talking about is Bill Randall; he is a very honorable man who understands what it means to grow up poor and disadvantaged and he fully supports Ron and the new board because he knows they are doing the right thing.
