WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

More magnet, Forest Ridge High discussions

The outgoing school board delves back into the world of magnet schools and the new Forest Ridge High School today.

During today's facilities committee meeting, board members will talk more about changes to the magnet and year-round selection process, focusing particularly on how the current system has affected Fox Road Elementary. They'll also discuss whether to continue going ahead with construction of Forest Ridge High.

The board is moving forward on both issues even though it's likely the new members will go the other way after taking office Dec. 1.

Today's meeting is open to the public. It begins at 9 a.m. in the board conference room, 3600 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh.

...

Why are decisions made with such haste? How long will this high school be standing? 30, 40, 50+ years? No consideration is given to the long term impact of their decisions. It's always deemed a "crisis".

More "Damn the torpedos"

More "Damn the torpedos" arrogance from this school board.  If they know that the new school board majority will switch gears on the Forest Ridge project, then continuing to spend money on the current path is a disservice to taxpayers.

And it seems the way the facilities planning staff does their estimates, they will claim that a change in direction two months from now will delay the new high school opening by four years.  Why not save those extra two years and make the switch now since they know it is coming.
