WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Membership of the new student assignment committee

Bookmark and Share

The first meeting of the Wake County school board's new student assignment committee has now been set for Thursday.

School board member John Tedesco, the committee chairman, said the meeting will focus on looking at a handful of node changes for the 2010-11 school year. This includes requests from Brier Creek families to be reassigned to the new Mills Park Middle School and to stay at Panther Creek High.

The meeting will take place as the final community members of the committee are being finalized. The membership so far represents a diverse mix of people, some of whom will be well known on the blog.

Each board member was asked to nominate a person. Tedesco said that rather than have a formal board vote, he forwarded the names to all the board members to see if they were ok with them.

In District 1, Chris Malone nominated Robert Bridges, a former Wake Forest town commissioner who had served with Malone on that board. Bridges is the parent of a current student and a Democrat, Malone noted.

In District 3, Kevin Hill nominated Sue King.

In District 5, Anne McLaurin nominated Anne Cooper. a parent and supporter of the diversity policy.

In District 6, Carolyn Morrison nominated Anne Sherron, her board advisory council chairwoman and a member of the old staff student assignment  committee. At the Dec. 1 board meeting, Sherron accused the new majority of acting "like a bull in a china shop" with all the new resolutions that were added at the board table.

In District 7, Deborah Prickett nominated Eric Blau, a Leesville parent and regular on the WakeEd blog. He's one of the numbers-crunching critics of the diversity policy and the current method of student assignment.

In District 8, Ron Margiotta nominated Ann Rouleau, a Western Wake parent who frequently showed up at the meetings of the old board to question whether the diversity policy is actually helping  low-income students.

In District 9, Debra Goldman nominated Barbara Walsh, a Cary parent who helped successfully fight last year the reassignment of the Churchill Downs, MacGregor Downs, Royal Ridge and Woods of Kildaire neighborhoods out of Apex High to Athens Drive High.

Still up in the air are Keith Sutton's pick for District 4 and Tedesco's pick for District 2. Tedesco said he's waiting first to see who Sutton chooses before making his selection.

It's this group that will spend the next 9 to 15 months, assuming the community schools resolution passes Tuesday, drawing up the new system for student assignment in Wake.

Click here to compare with the membership of the old student assignment commitee that had advised staff.

The meeting will run from 4-6 p.m. in the board conference room, 3600 Wake Forest Road in Raleigh.

UPDATE

The final two commitee members have been selected.

In District 4, Sutton nominated Nicole Sullivan, Manager of Office of Research and Planning for the state Department of Corrections' Division of Prisons. Sullivan is also a member of the Southeast Raleigh Assembly.

In District 2, Tedesco nominated David Williams, a Garner parent and member of the old staff student assignment committee. Williams is also a member of Greater Garner Advocates, the group of civic and business leaders in Garner that had orginally backed Cathy Truitt in the election.

The meeting is still set to take place Thursday even though Tedesco's voice is nearly gone.

I had the wrong Sue King. It's not the former principal of Timber Drive Elementary although she too is a retired Wake principal. She has a son at Sanderson High.

Experience?

Where is the experience with this population? I know we know a diverse (no pun intended) set of people but there are so many examples of people in our community who are helping high risk kids that could be part of this committee.

The entire system and focus

The entire system and focus cannot rest solely on the issues surrounding at-risk students. Most students are not at-risk...they matter too.

Yes, non- at-risk students including the AG students matter too

That is excacly why I want my kids to go to a high school like that too.

Highest Achievement gaps

Would you want your children attending a school that has one of the highest achievement gaps in the county? How about a school that graduates some of the smallest percentage of the minority and poor children who attend - 38%? Those are both Enloe. I know the goodies at Enloe look good, but it is a class-based system incarnate - just fyi so you can decide if that is something you want your kids to learn while they're learning math.

While Enloe did quite well

While Enloe did quite well many other HS also participates.

GO FUQUAY!! I can't speak

GO FUQUAY!!

I can't speak for any of the schools rated above it, but I can guarantee you that FVHS is a community high school.

only 4 points behind Cary

only 4 points behind Cary Academy and $30k richer for it ... not bad

You don't need to go to Enloe to sign up

Q #2. How young can a person start in the AMC program?
A. Students can begin at any age that they and their parent/teacher/mentor believes them to be ready.  Students as young as 8 have participated.

Q #4. What if my school doesn’t offer the AMC tests?

A. Urge your principal, math teacher, gifted education coordinator or anyone else you can think of to help you out and register for the contest.  If your school doesn’t offer the AMC tests to you, then one option would be to offer the tests to your school.  You could offer to pay for the registration and material cost for the school, making it hard for them to refuse. Please make arrangements at your school to register as we must send the contest materials to the school directly.  Many colleges and universities also host the contests, particularly the “B” date of the AMC 10/12.  Check our web pages for a list of participating Institutions of Higher Learning.

In 2009 we are continuing the option for students/schools who wish to participate in the AMC 10 B/12 B contests. The Mathematical Association of America has requested its member institutions of higher learning to consider offering the AMC 10/12 Contests on the "B" date of February 24, 2010 to students whose schools will not be offering the B date.

NC State and UNC both partticipate.

And Enloe students have it so easy

Easier if you're at a school with more math-gifted kids, is what I mean.  You can only advocate so much before your school calls you a pushy mom.

Did you notice there are

Did you notice there are not many Anglo names like Smith and Jones anymore?

Shreyas Tikare, juniors Arjun Bhattacharya, Andrew Miller, Mark Greenfield, Amitoj Singh, Viju Mathew, Samuel Abrams, Kimberly Yao, Yash Mehta, Karthik Ardhanareeswaran sophomores Ivan Kuznetsov, Nick Tobey, Lisa Zheng, Eric Li, Ben Hu, and freshmen Calvin Deng, Jason Liang, Tejas Sundaresan.

My kids will be right at home

Yes, I noticed that, my kids will fit right in.

Two thought ... why are not

Two thought ... why aren't your kids at SE (Math Magnet) or NC School of Math?

Second, as the % of F&R population grows in a school, the opportunity for bright kids who are left shrinks as the critical mass of teachers and students extinguishes as you have experienced… some people can not seem to wrap their head around that concept that schools filled with poor kids have fewer opportunities for bright kids like yours.  We want schoool where you do not need to be rich to be challenged.

NC School of Science and Math

is a boarding school.  SE is not as desirable as Enloe, plus it being a magnet, is impossible to get in.

School of Math & Science is

School of Math & Science is very difficult to get into.  THey only accept so many students from each county and its very selective.

NC School of Science and Math only educates 11th and 12th grade

NCSSM only educates 11th and 12 grade, and Asians are no longer the minorities.  The school is trying to attract Hispanics and African Americans.  So another thing going against my kids.

You should check out NCSSM online

2010 Wake County French Festival

"More than 700 students from across Wake County participated in the 2010 Wake County French Festival on Thursday, March 11. Students in grades 6 through 12 competed in events: Traditional Songs, Spelling Bee, Original Group Dramatics, Poetry Recitation, Theater Performance, Talent, and Cultural Exhibits. Dozens of volunteers, parents and chaperones helped to make the event a special day. Community members from the French-speaking community in Wake County served as judges for the competitions, including representatives from the Canadian Consulate. Tom Huffstetler, WCPSS Senior Administrator for Second Languages, coordinated the event in an effort to bring awareness to the importance of speaking another language in the 21st century."

And we only have Spanish for foreign language in middle school, sad.

Good for them....

Personally, I detested French in middle and high schools.  I still don't know why we spent so much time conjugating verbs and learning about different verb tenses.  By the time I finished, I could conjugate 15 different irregular verbs in ~6 different tenses, but still only knew enough French to get my face slapped.  Hopefully, foreign language education has changed in the last 25 years.

And some middle schools

And some middle schools don't have any!  It is sad.  :-(

Oops, repost, could not delete

woody ... what do you mean

woody ... what do you mean the "entire system" ... F&Rs make up 30% of the whole, 10% of the bussed, 0% of people you care about, and 100% of the neglected ... they have no PAC, your AFP don't care about them since they don't contribute, WCSA is too scared to visit their schools, and your numbers show the system has failed them ... you answer is to concentrate them in a few school similar to what was done in housing in the '60's when we build ghettos to better deliver services ... sound familiar ...the only thing the "entire system" is concentrated on is educating on the cheap ... the lowest legal education at the lowest possible cost ... that is what we excel at ...

None of that makes any sense

None of that makes any sense to me. What is AFP? What is your point about the 60s? Why is WSCA scared?

...nevermind, I don't really care what your questions are

Perhaps they will be part of

Perhaps they will be part of the at-risk student achievement committee?  Or whatever that committee is called.  That's where I think people with those skills would be more useful.

Oops.

My bad jenman. That is what I was referring to.

At the last COW meeting on

At the last COW meeting on March 2,  Kevin Hill asked why  no citizens will  be appointed to the "economically disadvantaged task force."  (Economically disadvantaged student achievement task force)

He also asked why citizens  appointed to ad hoc committees will not have their votes counted towards committee recommendations, as has been done in the past.

He received no answers from Ron that I heard, only that these  and  other issues were vetted among the committee chairs and if Hill had any more questions he could send them to Ron.

Check WRAL online- March 2 meeting - Part 2.  Hill raises questions at around the 5 minute mark.

Heard the same.

Which is yet another reason I question whether this committee has any real input on the outcome or is just a required exercise.

Eric, not to be too blunt

Eric, not to be too blunt but aren't you guys just going to rubber stamp what Ron and John tell you to do? I don't see where there is much need for meetings since the people are from WSCA and already have the plan worked out.

Why don't you talk to Eric

Why don't you talk to Eric sometime.  As you can see from just the blog posts here, he has a firm grasp on the data, and no one will tell him to do anything.  You are just way out of line.

I do not get the impression

I do not get the impression Eric is looking for answers or input just the fastest way to implement Art's plan.

Eric B and Art Pope working

Eric B and Art Pope working in collaboration??!! Okay, now you've really lost it. Very funny stuff.

Eric is a well meaning pawn

Eric is a well meaning pawn and you are his employee ...

You Could Not Possibly Be More Wrong About This

Literally.

Okey, dokey. Pardon me, I

Okey, dokey. Pardon me, I have an appointment back in the real world.

You know

your fear seems to be getting worse, have you thought about therapy at all?

Do you currently have any empty, or full, spray paint cans on your property?  Sealed

Congrats

I congratulate all involved. One question -- won't those selected just be a mirror of the board member who selected them and thus mirror the same 5-4 split seen on the board itself?

...

Did you worry about the vote count when this line up was in charge?

"...the members of the student assignment advisory committee. The members
are Diana Bader, Alison Donnelly, Anne Sherron, David Williams, George
Wait, Julie Stevens, Larry Dickens, Liz Parry and Roxie Cash."

Actually I've thought the

Actually I've thought the way student assignment has been handled has sucked for years if you want the truth.   Will restate again that I had no love of previous boards.

I agree that previous committees have historically tended to echo the positions of the appointing board members so am wondering if the same is not to be expected here.

I Can't Speak Directly About The Others

but I've known Eric for more than ten years and worked alongside him at two companies.   I have no doubt that he's likely to *agree* with the member who appointed him most of the time - because they do share basically the same views on school issues.

But as someone who shares NONE of those views I can assure you that I have absolutely no doubt that Eric WILL consider the facts and WILL dissent from Ms. Prickett if those facts genuinely convince him that the other side is right in a specific case.

I hope Eric will take some

I hope Eric will take some time to leave the Wakefield campus and see how the other half lives .... while Eric seems to have a good grasp of numbers, I am not sure he has ever traveled south of the beltline ... seeing what high F&R school face might be an eye opener for hime and beyond want a spreadsheet shows.

Can You Buy A Clue?

Not only is Eric a parent with kids in WCPSS he is also a graduate of WCPSS.

What schools?  Are you sure

What schools?  Are you sure about this?

Leesville HS class of 1996

Leesville HS class of 1996

yes he is and yes he

yes he is and yes he did.

WHY do you need to know WHAT schools?  just accept that fact this this is true.  good grief!

Ah Angela we meet again!

Ah Angela we meet again!  thought you were leaving the blog?

do you not know where he went?

Why not tell?  Nobody can verify if you don't tell (just like TrailerParkLady saying "my home town" all the time but not saying where it is so we can research further - super annoying!!)

Angelaw and I Both Know, But We Don't Want to Tell

If Eric chooses to tell you he will.  He is on these blogs periodically.

Come on Carson, we should

Come on Carson, we should all rejoice that WCPSS has A graduate and that he is smart--he may wind up being one of the last good graduates.

Nope.

I've met some very recent ones who were brilliant, leaving for university with more scholarships and awards than they could possibly spend.

You are so clueless, user.

You are so clueless, user.  If you're going to make judgements about people you might as well know something (anything?) about them.

See ... that is where Eric

See ... that is where Eric jumps in and tells about working with Barwell ES for the last year and he has developed a number of proposals that their PTA endorsed as ways reassignment can help their kids ... that is the assurance I was hoping for ... no judgment ... my point is, I don’t see where Leesville or Wakefield need anymore supports on this committee …

Each board member got to

Each board member got to nominate somebody.  Are we going to say that unless you're from a higher poverty school you can't serve on the committee?

If you really aren't making a judgment, then why do you phrase things in such a snide way?
