WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Members named to superintendent search committee

Bookmark and Share

Wake County school board chairman Ron Margiotta has named the members of the superintendent search committee but Keith Sutton is not one of them.

Board vice chairwoman Debra Goldman will chair the committee. She had previously been charged with looking at various firms that might be hired to help conduct the search.

Goldman will be joined on the committee by Chris Malone, Carolyn Morrison and Deborah Prickett.

The Raleigh-Wake Citizens Association had asked Margiotta to name Keith Sutton as co-chairman of the committee.

Kevin Hill is also not on the committee. He had said he'd be interested in serving based on his prior experience as a district teacher and administrator. But Morrison and Prickett provide the new committee with two educators.

Give Me A Break

Goldman, Prickett & Malone - Are you kidding - What do they really know about education????? Goldman appears to always be a little confused during the Board meetings, Prickett only speaks when someone has given her something to read & Malone opens his eyes wider every time someone says something he has a problem with (especially what the cost effect will be on that new school site he ran for). As for Morrison at least her background is strong with education experience. She would at least know what to ask a candidate when the time came to question one. By the way, I wonder if Tedesco gave Ron any lip because he was not named to the search committee??? I know he was upset since he is the one who keeps responding to interviews about the future. Poor guy !!!!!

You Can Say That About Candidates on Both Sides Actually...

Actually Prickett was in the public school system for 20+ years and now is at the DPI.  I would say she has some knowledge of eduction.  Please give me the qualification for Mr. Sutton beyond the fact that he was hand picked for the job!

Pricket qualified?????

She is a "consultant" for DPI and her job entails administering the Character Education Program.....ironic?  Now here is an easy cut to help the State's budget.

Struck A Nerve

Ms. Prickett's 20+ years in the public school system and now at DPI only means she has learned to read the information given to her more efficiently.  I understand she has used the term "NO Comment" quite often when meeting with the people in her district.  That pretty well sums up her ability.

selection to these committee have nothing to do with

qualifications... it's at the discretion of the BOE chairman.  Of the BOE members, who has actually interviewed and hired the most job candidates?  Based upon this criteria, I would assume Mr Hill should be on the committee, but that obviously is not going to occur.

John T

Maybe he was not picked because he is a candidate for the job - he is unemployed.

LOL !!  or is that not

LOL !!  or is that not funny but scary??

Just wait till carson

Just wait till carson clobbers you with questions.

Why

did it take so long to form this committee? Dr Burns tendered his resignation in the begin of March. Mrs Goldman seems to be a very organized and intelligent woman, but has very thin skin. Unsure she will be prepared for the "slings and arrows" that will be hurled in her direction... but I'm hoping for the best.

I don't know but then

I don't know but then everyone seems to have some ideas on priorities. The latest I read is about leaving the supdt.'s position vacant.

Whether the position is

Whether the position is filled or not will have little affect on inidividual student education ... I say leave the position  open for two years until we get out of this financial hole and put the money into keeping teachers.

I doubt they will leave the

I doubt they will leave the position vacant, it may take some time to do a good Supt. search.  I believe Ms. Goldman is an excellent choice in this capacity as she has had some experience interviewing and hiring people.

Examples Please

Goldman has had SOME experience interviewing and hiring people - Can you give us more information on when she did such - And what kind of employment was involved?  I just can't picture her is a position of management - especially the way she handles herself on the Board !!!!

Wasn't her managment

Wasn't her managment experience just finding other volunteer firefighters?
