The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system: the reassignment of thousands of students, the conversion of traditional-calendar schools to a year-round schedule, the district's response to growth and the school construction program.
WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.
You can't say the school board isn't doing something to help parents with childcare for the upcoming school year.
As noted in today's article, the board told staff to make it easier for parents to request that their children be dropped off at different bus stops in the afternoon.
Currently, you're only supposed to be dropped off in the afternoon at the same stop where you were picked up in the morning. Exceptions are made for daycare centers and after-school centers that are along on your route.
You're also only supposed to ride the bus you're assigned to although some principals make exceptions when they get a note from parents.
Staff wanted to tighten things up. Citing safety and security, they wanted to say that buses could only stop at daycare centers and after-school centers that are registered with the state.
Board members told staff to drop the registration requirement. They want the wording changed to say you can be dropped off at a care provider, which could include a relative or family friend.
Board members said they want to reduce the number of latchkey kids.
The board also wants staff to put in the policy wording that officially says principals can allow students to ride on different buses.
Before any of this can happen, there has to be space on the bus. The care provider must be located along an established bus route. The request must be made in writing.
It will be interesting to see how many families take advantage of these looser rules, which the board will formally adopt into policy next month or in July.

Wake Administrators Should Ride A School Bus
Fri, 05/29/2009 - 07:16 — AngelaWhttp://venitapeyton.com/2009/05/wake-administrators-should-ride-school.h...
After a school forum on Thursday, May 28 at the Martin Street Baptist Church, a parent shared that one child said that her bus driver wears an Ipod! How can one possibly know what is going on around them if all senses are not working together?
If kids are hollering, screaming, needing attention, who will know if there is an inattentive bus driver? Can you imagine a parent hearing all of the confusion if their child calls from a cell phone?
Maybe administrators don't want to know what is going on. Maybe they can’t tolerate the noise and all the questions asked by kids. But they should know, because student safety is the responsibility of the Wake County Public School System.
'Out of sight, out of mind' is not a good policy when it comes to protecting our children throughout each day of their public school experience. And as the school budget suffers greater cuts, now is the time for the board and administrators to work closely with those who should be their strongest allies.
Parents.
I'm glad they're finally
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 08:29 — CaryMomof4I'm glad they're finally doing something that makes sense. Currently a child can't get off the bus at another stop on their street to stay with a neighbor after school so they have to get off at their stop and walk back to the neighbor's house. I just saw the rates for Wednesday-only after-school care on their website - depending on what time your school releases it could be over $400/year (you have to sign up for the entire year). And that's for the schools that offer WCPSS after-school program. I'm sure the YMCA program is even higher, if they even offer a Wednesday-only program.
If they really...
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 06:26 — gunfam...wanted to reduce the number of latch key kids they would do away with MYR! Oh and also stop this nonsense of 1 hr early release on Wednesdays and more early release days!! ARGH!!
Why you post crazyiness!

Did anyone catch the last
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 06:16 — rr77rr99Did anyone catch the last few lines in the "hard copy" of this story this morning... they are looking at longer bus rides because they will have less buses on the road.
Well who created that mess? HuH?
