WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Magnet and calendar application results released today

Bookmark and Share

Nearly a month after originally scheduled, Wake County families can now find out today if they've been accepted into a magnet school or calendar application school for this fall.

Click here for the online link to check application results. You'll need the confirmation number you received when you registered. If you've lost it, contact Growth and Planning at 850-1921 or the Magnet Resource Center at 501-7900.

Families have until next Friday, April 23, to decide whether to accept the new assignment. Families are being asked to decline on the web site.

The original notification date was March 18. But it was pushed back twice because of assignmetn changes and calendar conversions made by the school board.

Also starting Monday, parents can check with their child's year-round school about track assignments for the upcoming school year. In a year where some families were involuntarily moved to other tracks because of budget and class size issues, Wake says "principals will be working to better align family preferences and needs with track assignments to provide more stability for families and to avoid further track changes."

UPDATE

Just to be clear, Wake assumes you're accepting the magnet/calendar seat unless you decline online by next Friday.

denied for YR

Denied YR for both rising K & rising 2nd. Our traditional calendar base school is unacceptable to us, and we're now priced out of the private school market. Last year they dropped a class from the YR school---Looks like it's time to move West, to a less-diverse node with a YR base.

Third time wasn't the charm.

We'll keep trying! A true lottery would be wonderful. Our school is intentionally under-enrolled, so unless something changes, our chances will always be 10%.

You need to be in round

You need to be in round zero... siblings! Time for a adopt-a-magnet-kid.com website.

LOL -- I'm beginning to

LOL -- I'm beginning to think that's what is needed to survive the lottery system. I guess parents in Wake County will need to start thinking of these things when planning the make-up of their families and timing of siblings (four year spread may work great in ES, but you'll get left out in the cold during MS!).

Good post, redballoon.

Will WCPSS release numbers

Will WCPSS release numbers to you Mr. Hui regarding number of applicants offered seats in magnet or calendar options?

What about school by school temporary enrollment at each school for 2010-11 after acceptances factored in?

Best guess is they'll

Best guess is they'll release the data at Tuesday's committee of the whole meeting or some other board meeting in the near future. I'm guessing from the latter sentence you're talking about enrollment projections for each school. They'll probably present those at some future board meeting as well.

Keung,

do you know whether  they were able to place all applicants for YR seats?

I don't know for sure. But

I don't know for sure. But Laura Evans ahd warned at the April 6 meeting that she didn't think they'd be able to place everyone. It was a bit of a retreat from the plan that Chuck Dulaney had put out in February saying that requests would be approved regardless of capacity. But with staff raising capacity issues, board members seemed to understand that some people weren't going to get what they wanted, both for year-round schools or for traditonal-calendar schools.

Do you know anything about

Do you know anything about the nodes that were proposed to have their year round option school be reassigned as part of the school calendar choice resolution that was passed in January. These nodes were going to be moved because they felt that certain schools would be overcrowded if everyone that applied was accepted. I believe they decided a couple of months ago to not do the reassignment at that time and wait until they saw what the demand was at those schools. We haven't heard anything since then and were wondering if it's still a possibility that we will be moved or if it is not going to happen this year? Thanks!

I don't remember all the

I don't remember all the nodes off the top of my head but if they' weren't approved by the board on April 6 or March 23 then they weren't made.

Look at http://www.wcpss.net/news/2010_april7_assignment/  and http://www.wcpss.net/news/2010_march24_assign_changes/

If you're not listed in either one, then you're still with the same assignments you had under the board plan adopted last year.

Declined again

Applied again this year for both the child declined last year and also for her rising 9th grade sibling. Declined for both.

Nope, were declined for our magnet choice.

What a surprise.

Us, too

Oh well...

..

Sorry you didn't get the selections you wanted.

Thank you.

Thank you very much.
