WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Looking for Sharpton's intervention

Bookmark and Share

For now at least, the school system doesn't have to deal with the Rev. Al Sharpton in the fight over a possible slave cemetery on school property.

Sharpton had been invited to tour the cemetery on Saturday by neighbors who are fighting a planned high school on the site. He wasn't able to attend, but representatives of the NAAACP did visit the site.

It wasn't that much of a stretch considering that Sharpton was in the Triangle on Sunday to speak at N.C. Central University in Durham.

It definitely would liven things if Sharpton entered the fight. The controversial New York civil rights activist hosts a daily radio talk show and was a Democratic candidate for president in 2004.

Neighbors still hope Sharpton can visit the site the next time he's in town.

Even without Sharpton, the NAACP could make life hard on the school district if it joins the opposition to the construction of the school.

As of last week, school administrators were saying they thought they could build around the cemetery without having to move the graves.

The idea took root in the 1990s when psychologists showed men drawings of woman's silhouettes and asked them which were most sexy. Researchers found that men gravitated toward images with a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.7 - in other words, with a waist about a third narrower than the hips. Those same hourglass proportions are reportedly shared by stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Jessica Alba, and linked in medical studies with a lower risk of heart disease.

Drug Intervention

With the big migration of

With the big migration of "northerners" to the Triangle Area, I was wondering how long it would take Al Sharpton to get his butt down here and put his nose into everyone's business... even if they make "business up".... google Tawana Brawley for you Southerners who have no clue who this guy is.  He shoots his mouth off first and asks questions later.

Problem is, we don't have Howard Stern down here to keep an eye on him and update us on the "Sharpton Sightings"
