WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Wake CARES
may need a new lawyer after next week.

Bob Hunter, the lead attorney for Wake CARES, is running on Tuesday for a seat on the N.C. Court of Appeals. If he wins, he'll need to step away from his legal practice.

"I certainly wish him well but we'll miss him," said Kathleen Brennan, a co-founder of Wake CARES.

Brennan said that Hunter's law firm — Hunter, Higgins, Miles, Elam, & Benjamin — will take over if he wins the court seat.

Hunter is running against incumbent Judge John Arrowood. He's not one of the three judges who served on the panel that ruled against Wake CARES in the year-round lawsuit.

Good news for WakeCares

When Bob Hunter wins a seat on the State Appeals Court, we will be making one more step towards accountability, honesty choice and quality in education, diminishing the need for WakeCares.  They deserve the rest they will get, these courageous citizens.
