WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Looking at today's school board meeting

Bookmark and Share

You might want to show up early for today's school board meeting.

Some 200 people are expected to watch in person the four new board members get sworn in. Plus, you've got a lot of people who may show up at the public comment section.

All this will occur while most of the people in the Administration building are still at work. Parking spots will be at a premium.

The swearing in of the new members will be the first order of business when the meeting starts at 3 p.m. in the main board room, 3600 Wake Forest Road in Raleigh.

Former N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice I. Beverly Lake will administer the oath to Debra Goldman.

Senior Administrative Law Judge Fred Morrison will swear in both Chris Malone and John Tedesco. Fred Morrison is the husband of board member Carolyn Morrison.

Former N.C. Appeals Court Justice Joe John will swear in Deborah Prickett.

Then will come the reception. The meeting will resume around 5:15 p.m. when they'll vote on a new vice chair and do some other procedural stuff.

The public comment section  is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. It's normally done at 4 p.m.

You'll likely hear today from supporters of magnet schools and the weekly Wednnesday early dismissals as they make their pitch to the new board.

Anybody live-tweeting?

Don't really care about the reception, but will be interested to see what happens in the main part of the meeting!

I second that!

Thank you so much for all you're doing.
