WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Linking school diversity and "justice immigration" issues

Bookmark and Share

Supporters of Wake County's old diversity policy are uniting this weekend with critics of the federal 287(g) program that targets illegal immigrants.

The Great Schools in Wake Coalition, NC HEAT, NC Equals and the Youth Organizing Institute are holding a voter registration training session on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh. Organizers are closely linking the issues of school diversity and immigration.

"Participants will also learn about how to get involved in building power in our communities to improve our schools and work for justice immigration policies," according to the event website. "If you care about good schools for ALL children and creating a community of tolerance, love, and respect, please come out to this training."

NC Equals says its goal is to register voters and "turn out the vote so that elected officials can join us in putting pressure on local officials to change the practices of North Carolina law enforcement." In this case, they mean ending all 287(g) agreements.

NC Equals, GSIW, NC HEAT and the Youth Organizing Institute are all members of Wake Education Advocates, which is also helping organize next weekend's parent advocacy retreat.

Confused

Let me make sure that I am understanding this correctly - its seems that the same people that have been intolerant, hateful and disrespectful to those who believe the system needs to change are now planning to be the trainers for "creating a community of tolerance, love, and respect"? Interesting just how much "in the eye of the beholder" comes into play in life.

I wonder with which topic they plan to start:

How to be tolerant and respectful of "those who aren't from around here"?

How to love Italian-Americans?

How not to disrepectfully stereotype people by social economic class?

How people with language barriers shouldn't be viewed as a burden to spread around?

How people of all socioeconomic classes should be treated with respect and that it is not OK to say middle class people are better or better for something than people with lower incomes?

That mandatory assignments based on demographic labels for some and more choice for other demographic labels, (rather than voluntary choice regardless of demographic labels for all) is not actually tolerance or respect or love?

How putting someones crossed-out picture on button is disrepectful?

How taking over a public speaking session with protests and not yielding at the end of one's time is disrespectful of the other speakers?

Or maybe - how to be respectful of differing policital viewpoints perhaps?

You are a treasure ...and

You are a treasure ...and one of the most insightful and intelligent posters on these forums. Keep up the great work. Your words make a difference.

Speaking of links, I wonder

Speaking of links, I wonder how long it will be before linking 'diversity' with global warming, the weak dollar, and lady gaga's (lack of) sartorial preferences.
