WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Light registration for student assignment public hearing

Bookmark and Share

The interest in speaking at Thursday's student assignment public hearing at Broughton High School hasn't been very high.

Wake County school officials say only 15 people have pre-registered online to speak for two minutes at the meeting. Online registration ends at 11:59 p.m. tonight.

You can also register at the door tomorrow from 4 to 4:50 p.m.

Because there is nothing new

What is there to say that hasn't already been said.   There is nothing significantly new in the "final" (it is an insult to call it final) that wasn't already there.   There is little transparency and little real data, no actual node choice lists and the feeder pattern hasn't significantly changed even with feedback.   There is no release of answers to all the comments and questions provided in the months of feedback and asking of questions.

It feels like the "final" plan is more like a good draft and that it is for 2013-2014 and not 2012-2013.

Plus who knows what mess we will be in with the new board as no matter what happens, something has to be ready in december to use to start 2012-2013 work.   Last year the board and planning screwed around for so long that things were delayed and people had no clue what calendar, schools, and tracks they were on just weeks before school started.

Tata was on...

WRAL news this morning and he claimed that the entire process was very transparent. Maybe it was to him.

Since he is closest to this

Since he is closest to this emerging fiasco, I am not surprised he thinks it is "transparent".

Why should anyone waste their time

Most people now know that the new board will be reversing anything this current board votes on next week and re-instating Chuck's Utopian Experiment soon after.

Any further discussions with the public about assignment is a total waste of time, imho.

What new board? There is the

What new board? There is the same GOP majority there was yesterday and that will continue until Losurdo replaces Margiotta to maintain that majority.
