WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Lecturing Broughton parents

Bookmark and Share

School board member Beverley Clark had a message on Tuesday for all those Broughton High School parents who had been lobbying for the magnet program to be saved.

Clark said the Broughton parents, who had bombarded board members with e-mail messages and calls, need to show the same level of energy during the budget season. She said the parents need to urge the county commissioners to provide the school system with adequate funding.

Clark warned that next year's budget negotiations could be very difficult. Considering that County Manager David Cooke warned this week that the county is facing a potential $17 million budget shortfall due to the global crisis, it's not lookiing good for a big boost in school funding next year.

changing the subject.. does

changing the subject.. does anyone know why there is school on Nov 4? It's going to be a DISASTER! I have been told that police departments are on alert, as things could turn ugly at polling sites.

School should be closed down on Election Day , especially in a POTUS election cycle.

Our school has no parking as it is. It's going to be one huge traffic jam all day and no one at WCPSS sees this?

Again, the short sightedness of these people is intolerable.

volatile atmosphere...

Traditional schools ARE closed....our principal has been trying to convince the powers-that-be to close our MYR ES since it is not SAFE, was told no, was told no to extra staffing, PTA has asked for parent volunteers so far, but she did hear yesterday that there WILL be some extra security.....my EXTRA security?? keep 'em home with the Traditional school kid!

If it's crazy...

when we go to drop off at 11AM, we'll just turn around and go back home.  I am not sure how busy our school will be as a polling station - but if it's slammed or there is any wild (as opposed to peaceful) protesting going on - we are outta there.

Yeah RIGHT Bev!

How about this Bev, POO on YOU!
Parents aren't lobbying for crap for you liars ANY LONGER!
Do what you must, but rest assured,
SO WILL WE!

The 17 million shortfall is NOT a "global crisis" you idiot and it will be the LEAST of your concerns going forward!

So is that a call to fund WakeEd Partnership or what.

As I read it, "We let you get away with it as long as you can continue to fund our propaganda machine.... or else." Am I being too hard on them?

OT: Wakefield Middle school had an incident according to my child (probable gang related) on Tuesday. A child was pushed down by one student and a second student hit the child that was down with a rock in the head. The injured child was having a seizure when the school called 911. The two young men involved were apparently expelled and arrested. I never hear any press, did anyone else?

Info

According to the Raleigh crime database, there was an incident of aggravated assault apparently at WMS on Friday the 17th.  I don't see any indication of what happened to anybody.

You can call and, maybe, find out more information.  It's incident p08119500.  It's district 22.

WMS

Before you write something about WMS and start rumors and scare everyone, you may want to get your facts correct.  There is was NO Gang fight nor any fight at WMS this week! Kids! The most sad part about it all is that parents believe their kids before they get their facts straight and blow ever thing about of poportion! Geez!

Are you sure, do you work there?

There definitely was an EMS called on Tuesday and a child in my daughter's class that said he spent a night in Juvenile Detention - he told several people in his class, he threw a rock at the kid having the seizure. The kid may of been lying, but EMS and the seizure did happen, and the child in question was absent the next day. I only asked if anyone knew about the alleged incident. Nobody is blowing this out of proportion, only wondering if it really did take place. I guess if it is not in the press, it never happened.... gee I should have known better.

So instead of spreading your

So instead of spreading your fear mongering rumors, why don't you call the principal and find out what really happened.

.

.

Yeah right - Only "Fear Mongering"

First off, I only wanted information, second as been said the school can't provide information (As rational people would assume).

Fear Mongering is having Democrats control the Executive and Legislative branches of government with veto over-ride power in the Senate; unfortunately hat might happen... and we are one breath away of turning the Supreme Court to an ideological based legal system. If socialism was so great, why has it failed everywhere it is tried. O sounds good only when you don't look at the details. If you have or work in a small (include  most local businesses)biz and have employees, you need to really look at all the proposals. 95% includes a lot of "hobby"businesses. And guess where the taxes and extra expenses will be passed on to. You got it, the rest of us.

Call the principal right.

Call the principal right. LOL

Principals by law cannot give out information about other students.   The principal must know about the rumors and the fact the principal is not quashing them is a sign that this incident is not a rumor.

I hate to say this, but violent incidents like this one do seem to be an epidemic in Wake schools.  Moore Sq fixed their issue with this problem and it wasn’t to by becoming draconian.  You should consider having your principal or PTA call Mr. Kershner .  Believe me Moore Sq is a different school this year to last year. Violent incidents and class disruption was the rule last year not the exception.  This year it’s a completely different school and they did it without becoming a jail like WCMS.  Plus it’s the same bunch of kids minus one or two.

Have not heard this

I have not heard via television/radio or read in the paper about this incident.  How terrible - have you heard if the child is going to be OK?

Treat as a rumor for now

My 6th grader heard it second hand at school, don't know if it is fact; that's why I asked. She told me it happened Tuesday and saw the EMS people first hand. The rest was "through the grapevine."

Huh

I thought that "neighborhood" (sorry for the quaint term) voted in favor of the bond and will probably continue to do so. So what's her point? She wants the ITB to lecture the OTB on her behalf? Thanks for my morning

Once again, denial isn't only a river in Egypt.

As Church Lady used to say; "Well isn't that Special!"

yeah but Broughton parents

yeah but Broughton parents are most likely ones that don't WANT at-large, they have the most to "lose" with a more efficient and "fair" BoE.....

I'm sure many more than Broughton parents have a "message" for Bec....can't print it here though.....

On the other side of the coin.....

If all concerned parents would apply about half that amount of energy country-wide to get "at-large" voting for School Board members, things would then be truly equal for all students, not just the elite living inside the beltline. Just vote NO for the "status-quo" seven up for re-election is a step in the right direction.

When I see post like the above, especially from elitist like Bev Clark, is just another good reminder why City of Raleigh should be given back its school system.

Break up the Beast!

Interesting...

I am sure they will lobby if they know they are getting to stay!  It will be hard to find parents of students to lobby cc's if the Board redraws the base and ends up re-assigning many of those families away.

(Do we really think that will happen though??)
