WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Licking stamps worked

I guess Perry Woods knew a thing or two.

Yes he did. Licking stamps,

Yes he did. Licking stamps, knocking on doors and having 35 years of education experience means something!

Along with $10 per vote it

Along with $10 per vote it gets you 52% of the votes against a candidate you have to create the nastiest personal attack campaign in the history of WCPSS BoE election history. Hardly something to be proud of.

It seems like I read Heather

It seems like I read Heather out raised Hill in this runoff. So Hill is beter fiscally then Heather, that should make you happy that he won.

$10 per vote

And how much did the GOP spend per vote in a losing effort ?  Hill was taken back by what the election process has become. Last time around he and his wife ran the campaign with $6k.  The landscape changed in 2009 with the influx of  the GOP$, just what do you think would happen this time around ?   I did not see one piece out of Hill negative towards Losurdo. On the other hand Lorsurdo's hands were all over the negative attacks on Hill.  This vote if more than anything was not Hill or Losurdo but a vote against Tedesco .  While people are speculating on the behavior of  Evans and Martin - the real story is how Tedesco, Malone, Prickett, and Goldman will react. Will they reach across the aisle or will they sit and pout like two year olds.

I don't recall any reaching

I don't recall any reaching across the aisle by Hill and McLaurin, very little by Sutton and Morrison. And recall a lot of pouting like 2 year olds from all of them. Are you suggesting the new minority emulate the old minority?

and if you think he gives a

and if you think he gives a crap about any of that, you have never dealt with Hill.

Hopefully good sense will now prevail...

I pray that the focus will now return to our students and treating the teachers and school staff that work with them with the utmost respect. Such respect was absent at times under Ronnie M's  and Tedesco's leadership...

$200k/20k = $10/vote

That's a heck of a lot of money chasing not so many votes.

?

Does that $200K include the $130K cost of the run-off?

you are right

Losurdo should have conceded after the first election and saved everyone a lot of time and money.

Eh....

She came a lot closer than the Dems predicted on Oct 11, when they talked about their polling showing her at 36% in the run-off.  A few percentage points separated them in the end.

A big lesson here is that District 3 is seriously divided.  The main thing Losurdo had going for her was Hill's record, and it came close to sinking him.  I hope that in the next 4 years, when Hill thinks about what's best for district students, the breadth of voices to which he gives serious consideration will be broader than it has been in the past.

YES!!!! Congratulations, Mr.

YES!!!! Congratulations, Mr. Hill!!!!

Ugh...

Well.  Best of luck to the board.  They'll need it.

Not any more...

We needed luck to get through  the past two years.

and god help WCPSS children

and god help WCPSS children and families, they'll need it MORE!

So God was not helping...

the past two years? I guess he doesn't like republicans then?

You're SOOO correct...

Angela W, your partisan group of right wing extremists have left quite a mess for the new board to make sense of - starting with the new, highly experimental, and COSTLY student assignment plan that was rushed through at Guiness Book of Records speed and reeks of "let's make up the rules as we play"!!!!

Let's pray indeed for progress...

Paula, "Independent, Fair & Speaking Up for MY Kids."

Paula "who has no idea on

Paula "who has no idea on earth what she is talking about"

progress WAS being made, now we'll just substitute "achievement seats" for "socioeconomic status" which was substituted for "race" and be back to busing in no time.

politcs-pffft.  I've never been about politics doll and if you weren't such a newbie you'd know that.

AngelaW, okay perhaps one shouldn't gloat...

it's not beyond the realm of possibility that Losurdo will call a press conference at 6pm tomorrow to announce live that she's requesting a 2nd run-off (and 3rd vote!) since she "narrowed the gap" (vote).  On a serious note she lacked the background and preparation to "narrow the gap" in relation to student achievement so seems we had a decent outcome tonight.

Paula, "Independent, Fair & Speaking Up for MY Kids."

Yet she was able to get

Yet she was able to get almost half the votes against someone with 32 years experience in WCPSS. What does that say about Hill? Losurdo endured  the nastiest personal attack campaign in Wake County School Board history and still was able get 48% of the vote. Congratulations Ms. Losurdo for enduring the crap you had to deal with.

Paula "moronic babblings

Paula "moronic babblings never cease"

whatever.  Time and busing will tell.

And the surprise of the night

Hill wins!

So much for staying tuned the rest of the night huh.

Mission Accomplished!

Mission Accomplished!

We are turning the clocks

We are turning the clocks back 10 years. What was old is new again!

The tea partiers wanted to turn...

it back two hundred years and you are okay with that?

Ha Ha...Really?

Ha Ha...Really? And I was afraid they wanted to go back to the Bronze Age, whew what a relief!

Bedford and Wakfield could

Bedford and Wakefield could tighten things up.

They're both in. We're down

They're both in. We're down to 1-42, which is MIllbrook Exchange Park, and 1-45 which is Christ Baptist Church on Newton Road neaer Six Forks Road.
