WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Keeping the comment period open for the new assignment maps

The public comment period on the Wake County community-baaed student assignment zone maps has been indefinitely extended.

The comment period had been set to expire midnight Monday. But at the request of school board member John Tedesco, chairman of the student assignment committee, the online comment page will be left up throughout the development of the new maps.

Tedesco said the page should be updated after each decision made by the committee to reflect the latest changes.

The current comment page, as of Wednesday evening, still had up all four sample maps. It should be updated to only include the high school base assignment map and the new regional zone map.

A presentation to the committee on Tuesday showed people were either not thrilled with the maps or wanted more information. Click here for the spreadsheet.

Of the 650 comments, a total of 268, or 41.2 percent, disliked the maps. Another 177, or 27.2 percent, liked them while 139, or 21.4 percent, wanted more information.

Without detailed node information on the site, a plurality of comments was on the maps in general.

The best response was for the high school base assignment map picked by the committee to be the starting point for the new plan. Of the 132 responses, a total of 66, or 50 percent, liked the map. You had 46, or 34.9 percent, dislike it with 15, or 11.4 percent, wanting more information.

Where are you...

getting the data on the comments from? Where can we see the comments other people posted? How do I know my comment was included? Why all this secrecy? Isn't this supposed to be an open process?

like vs dislike?

Unsure if I understand.  I made a comment, but it was not stated in the form of liking or disliking a map.  Now, I wonder how my comment was considered.
