Wake County school board member John Tedesco's colleagues weren't joking when they repeatedly said he was charged up on caffeine when he gave a fiery speech at last Thursday's Northern Wake Republican Club meeting.
During the speech, Tedesco praised the board majority's actions since December 2009 in "revamping public education." He also ripped into liberals, including what he called their "unholy trinity" of the NAACP, the Great Schools in Wake Coalition and Raleigh FIST.
"They will try and scare people," Tedesco said of the opposition. "People use fear. These are cowards who understand that anger can be power as long as there is a victim on TV. So they will strike fear.
They struck fear. 'Well the new board is anti-teacher. They're going to be against the teachers. Or they're going to be against this particular race or that particular race, or this particular income or this particular class of people or this particular neighborhood.' They're going to continue to work to try and divide us."
But Tedesco said the reality is, unlike the old board, they didn't lay off teachers last year or so far this year. He went on to tout Superintendent Tony Tata's budget, which is based on the state only cutting funding by 5 percent.
Tedesco defended not doing what their "liberal friends on the board" want to do in asking county commissioners for more money even if it raises taxes. As things stand, Tata's budget asks the county for $313.5 million, which would mean no increase for the third year in a row.
"The people of this community couldn't afford that," Tedesco said of a tax increase. "We understood that. And you know what, recessions are part of capitalism. There are ebbs and flows that help teach us how to do things better."
Tedesco said they dealt with a $100 million funding loss by "trimming all administrative fat," drawing large applause from the crowd. (It also helped that Wake has $28 million in federal money to save jobs this year.)
"Several middle managers who were managing something that managed something that managed something, we're talking about, are now gone," Tedesco said.
Tedesco went on to tout savings from renegotiating the cell phone contract, software contract and savings on capital costs. He also pointed to savings that would come if they can sell their administrative buildings as part of the move to Cary.
Tedesco said they're "rempowering families" in student assignment and made it easier for families, especially low-income ones, to get into magnet schools by eliminating the diversity component in the selection criteria.
He also touted the Renaissance schools and the Green Hope High and Knightdale High AP partnership.
"This is a board that's aggressively moving forward in the right direction so I want to thank them," Tedesco said. "But I want to tell you something. You ain't seen nothing yet."
Tedesco praised the hiring of Tata as superintendent in the face of "critics on the opposite side of the aisle who said 'Well, great the guy can shoot and kill but can he teach." That's a shot at remarks made by school board member Carolyn Morrison at the time of the hiring.
Tedesco said Tata has to lead the school system, not be a substitute teacher.
Tedesco also addressed this fall's school board elections.
"We need your help," Tedesco told the crowd. "We need to get a strong solid team that's going to be committed to continuing the progress forward in the face of aggressive opposition. They're not stopping. They're only getting started."
Tedesco pointed to the recent fundraiser for Wake school board candidates whose sponsors included Gov. Bev Perdue and other leading Democrats. He called them "liberal cronies." He also singled out State Schools Superintendent June Atkinson's participation at the event, which he called a "conflict of interest."
"[They] all got in on hosting a fundraiser for a single county school district," Tedesco said. "How little they've become. What they need to do is focus on their priorities and do not try and usurp the democratic process that the citizens in Wake County spoke for."
Tedesco said the Washington Post, New York Times, Comedy Central and former Pres. Bill Clinton are going after the board majority "because they know they're making a difference." (He probably meant to say we're instead of they're.)
"If we can show them, with one of the largest school districts in the state, the largest in the state and one of the largest in the nation, what great success conservatives can have in revamping public education, they're done," Tedesco said to applause. "They're done and they know that. You are on the forefront of a national movement that is going to strengthen and reform public education for our children, for our communities. It's needed, it's necessary and it's needed now."
During his closing, he mocked the Wake County Democratic Party's recent "take back our schools" training session and the leadership of the Democrats in the state over the past 120 years.
"They've already started trainings," Tedesco said. "They call it their 'we will train you how to take back our schools.' Are you serious? You had them for 30 years as a county. We finally get it a year-and-a-half and move things in the right direction. Have you lost your minds so much that 'you've got to take them back?'"
WakeEd
The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?
WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Does Tedesco mean what he says (in which case he is a scoundrel) or does he not think about what he says (in which case he is an idiot)?
Well I'm sure he doesn't
Mon, 04/25/2011 - 20:20 — Andrew95Well I'm sure he doesn't actually mean for you to take him seriously./sarcasm
He's at least a moderate politican. As we've seen, he's very good at changing face according to his audience.
JT - aren't you using...
Sat, 04/23/2011 - 08:47 — bpuli9999exactly the same scare tactics?
Huh? What did he say
Sat, 04/23/2011 - 09:50 — woodstockHuh? What did he say that was scary? Is it that education in Wake County will be no longer in the incompetent of hands of the extreme left who value social engineering and a bloated, politically correct bureaucracy over student achievement and common sense, family-friendly policies?
Tedesco's message is one of optimism that has resonated strongly with the voters of Wake County... and beyond.
Duh....

Horrible Models for Our Kids
Fri, 04/22/2011 - 09:21 — lovingpenelopeEvery time I stop by these message boards---or listen to John Tedesco speak about the state of our schools---I feel sick to my stomach because of the combative venom that people are spewing at one another.
Democracy is a collaborative act, y'all.
It requires a willingness to listen from everyone who chooses to participate. It requires a willingness to see others----including those with very different perspectives from your own---as teammates...partners whose efforts and ideas must be respected at the least and valued at the best.
Those are the lessons that today's kids need to learn if there is any hope of having a successful country tomorrow. And those are lessons that no one here seems to have ever learned----including the spiteful, immature, politically driven people who represent us.
I don't care what side of the aisle you fall on. I don't care if you think Tedesco or Reverend Barbour is a goat. I don't care if you want magnet schools or not. I don't care if you are tired of your kids being bussed or not. I don't care if you like Tony Tata or not, this kind of unproductive dialogue---from your elected officials and from your neighbors and coworkers---should concern you.
When are we going to demand that it ends? When will we grab control of the conversations ourselves and insist that people start acting like grown-ups?
What a joke. An insulting reminder of just what poor shape our county---and our country----is really in.
I have a proposal!
Thu, 04/21/2011 - 18:37 — NCSU_fanI think that any and all members of the school board should be required to shadow a teacher for one week before taking office. I think that our school board members are concerned about our childrens education but they don't have a any idea of the day to day struggles our teachers undergo. For example, a member of my wifes first grade team recieved a bad evaluation because she did not have colored copies for her centers, yet due to cut backs all color copiers have been removed from the schools. Does this make any sense, what is NC DPI smoking?
Teacher evals are done at
Thu, 04/21/2011 - 18:56 — AngelaWTeacher evals are done at school lever either by a Principal or an AP, depending on whether the teacher is a BT, certified, renewal year, etc....if there is a problem at that school with the way evaluations are being done, why doesn't your wife contact her BoE Rep? I believe you mentioned the school as Brentwood? That's Carolyn Morrison's District.

Hmmmm
Fri, 04/22/2011 - 11:30 — willynillyI think that was a member of his wifes first grade team if I read correctly. Anyway, if you dare notify a board member of ANYTHING wrong anywhere in this system you had better purchase asbestos underwear, a helmet, and buy a large guard dog. The only way to get the attention of the WCPSS is to call them on their s--t using some sort of federal agency that does not do what OUR ELECTED reps do in Raleigh...."Oh, I'm SO sorry, but we don't get involved in those issues" and then they post here.....right, Weiss? Ignoring a problem will never make it go away!!!!
neighborhood schools - leveling the playing field
Thu, 04/21/2011 - 17:45 — NCSU_fanIf neighborhood schools ever become a reality they will create schools with higher concentrations of low performing students, I think everyone can agree on that. Higher concentrations of students inherently means more work for teachers, i.e. retention processes, interventions, one-on-one instruction, etc. Trust me my wife is currently a 1st grade teacher at Brentwood E. (a predominantly economically disadvantaged school) who works 12-14hr days everyday. She was previously a 1st grade teacher in Cary that has significantly less economically disadvantaged students and she worked 10-12hr days. My question is should there be a tool such as increased pay or bonuses that these schools with high concentrations of low preforming students can utilize to hirer and maintain good teachers to level the playing field? She and all Brentwood teacher are looking for new jobs due to Race to the Top and this is one of the main issues she is weighing when determine where to apply. Why would teachers knowingly apply for positions at schools that require longer work days with no increase in pay?
Switch to Decaf
Thu, 04/21/2011 - 17:42 — dubiousIf JT is going to get wired guzzling that much TEA, he really should switch to decaf. He's shrill enough as it is.
Goodness!!!
Thu, 04/21/2011 - 12:32 — uBniceIs there not anything else he can harp on? The Wake County school system is nearly 50% minority. Socio-economic diversity was not an issue and is not an issue. It is done. Can we move forward?
Can he explain how they are going to handle growth. There are going to be a lot of angry parents in the years to come over reassignment. Wake County is projected to need 20-30 new schools in the next decade or so. Can anyone say the b-word (busing) without it having anything to do with socieconomic diversity because Wake is going to need a lot of busing in the years to come.
Garbage in, garbage out
Fri, 04/22/2011 - 08:58 — FSandYOUIf socioeconomic 'D' was not an issue then why did the last several school boards make it the thrust of their existence? You want to move forward? Tell it to the obstructionist.
Most people can see clearly that we don't need anywhere near 20-30 new schools. Not even close. First, cut that # in 1/2 because growth projections are always double the reality. Second, fill up ALL the existing schools and especially the empty tracks in year round schools before anyone mentions needing new schools. We have plenty of seats.
As for lots of angry parents, you're running a little behind, there are plenty of us who are still totally -issed off because that's all we've done for years is be reassigned, threatened to be reassigned or sit around waiting on people like Debra Goldman to muck up another move towards progress. And I betcha she ain't done yet!
** I'm still waiting to see if any journalist, reporter or anyone for that matter has the magic to get Debra Goldman to talk about ANYTHING. Apparently no one has enough talent to pull that miracle off huh.
** I think YOU should try.
Fri, 04/22/2011 - 11:28 — Andrew95** I think YOU should try. You would be a good tabloid reporter.

Thu, 04/21/2011 - 17:29 — DavidEisenstadtThroughout this video all I did was LOL... sometimes I wonder if you all just blindly follow JT or if you all actually believe this stuff.
I'm sure I'll get a lot of hate for posting this comment, so let me give you all a quick update: I am no longer "active" in NC H.E.A.T. and I haven't been for a while now. And yes, I did get arrested at a board meeting... I'm not really sure why every time I post something somebody points this out.
I agree with you guys on one thing, the school system needs a major fixing, but I still don't think that neighborhood schooling is the way to go.
Just curious, David...why
Fri, 04/22/2011 - 01:38 — WakeCountyParentJust curious, David...why are you no longer affiliated with them?
David, I'm really glad you
Thu, 04/21/2011 - 20:47 — CaryCurmudgeonDavid,
I'm really glad you are no longer associated with that group. You're right, our school system still needs a "major fixing," There are lots of ways any interested citizen can get involved in such fixing, and I hope you choose to stay involved in a positive way.
You go JT!!!
Thu, 04/21/2011 - 09:28 — FSandYOUYou are once again RIGHT ON THE MARK! The obstructionists he named are exactly that! Someone get a dozer and clear the path of progress because those who want to continue to stand in the way will be plowed over this Fall.
Once again!
