WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

John Tedesco files for District 2 school board seat

Bookmark and Share

Several people filed today for Wake school board, including a person that hasn't been mentioned before on the blog.

John Tedesco, a vice president for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle, filed to run in the District 2 seat that Horace Tart hopes to retain. Click here for Tedesco's web site.

"Forced busing, forced year-round assignments, redistribution, increased school violence, increased drop-out rates, schools bursting at the seams, and a system growing out of control, are merely the symptoms of our real problem," according to Tedesco's web site. "Shuffling kids to balance out numbers, test scores, and income ONLY waters down the real problems to the point where we can not identify or then solve. We have a SYSTEM and a Board that does not understand their primary responsibility is to put our children, families, & communities 1st."

Also filing today in District 2 were Tart, a builder and developer seeking a second term, and Cathy Truitt, a retired Johnston County educator.

Before anyone asks, Wake Schools Community Alliance has not endorsed anyone in District 2.

Today's other filers include:
District 1: Rita Rakestraw and Debbie Vair
District 7: Karen Simon
District 9: Ray Martin

Filing runs until noon July 17.

Tedesco to secure endorsements

Recognizing our School Board desperately needs leaders like John Tedesco, it appears many are coming together to stand behind him.

In a press release dated 7/15, Arnie Osborne, previously announced candidate for District 2, announced he will step aside to endorse John Tedesco. Tedesco's site is www.4wakekids.com.

Mr. Osbornes press release quotes the following.
"We must elect new School Board leaders who will put citizens first and make the sweeping changes needed to make our school system one we can be proud of. With John Tedesco’s filing for the District 2 School Board seat, I believe we have the right candidate to get that job done."

We are also hearing word that with D-2 being the one endorsement left from the Alliance, Tedesco appears to be their man. Incumbent Tart has already been denounced by members of the Alliance, while entrenched long term educator, Cathy Truitt, has failed to earn their confidence with regard to her ability to secure change.

Similar sentiments have been echoed by Garner Mayor, Ronnie Williams. Locals anticipate Mayor Williams to follow Osborne and the Alliance with an August endorsement.

It's in District 2.

It's in District 2.

But she won't have to adjust to vacating her classroom during track-out time to make way for another teacher.

Like most year round schools in Wake County, enrollment at Banks Road varies from grade to grade and from track to track. Creech said while some grades have two classes on each of the four tracks, fourth and fifth graders will run only three tracks.

Despite some empty classrooms, Creech said Banks Road is already ahead of projections for enrollment. When track four starts later this month, he'll have more than 600 students on campus
