WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

John Tedesco and the Rev. William Barber to appear on NC SPIN

Wake County school board member John Tedesco and the Rev. William Barber, president of the state NAACP, are going to get more television time to debate diversity in the state's largest school district.

NC SPIN announced today that Barber and Tedesco will appear on a special edition of the show that will be broadcast Aug. 15. In addition to Barber and Tedesco, regular panelists John Hood and Chris Fitzsimon will also be on the show that will be moderated by Tom Campbell.

"Our hope is that this will be a significant program that will honestly and intelligently discuss education in North Carolina," NC SPIN said on its Facebook page. "We look forward to interviewing these two leaders in current discussions in Wake County, which are similar to those facing many school systems in our state."

Tedesco and Barber were both interviewed at the same time for a live spot last week on CNN. But arguing that few North Carolinians would have seen the CNN report, NC SPIN issued a challenge last week for both men to debate on the show.

Just say no to this photo op on NC Spin

I feel it's true this is the kind of publicity we do not need more of in Raleigh - it's not helping the situation, the decision policies and it is only furthering Rev. Barbers agenda and his blatant dislike of this school board, since it's his goal to bring it down.  Why isn't he bothering Charlotte Mecklenburg about their supposed resegregation, or Durham about their underperforming black population.  Why isn't he beating up on the rest of the state's school districts that doesn't bus for diversity or reassign for diversity.  He's out for this one goal only - to show this School Board and parade around his NAACP and keep racism stirred up.  Tedesco should simply not take the bait for this chatdown.

Tedesco will do just fine,

Tedesco will do just fine, as always.

We will see Barber up there flapping his lips with the same ole rhetoric.

Not Tedesco Again

Please, Please, Please have Margiotta appear with Rev. Barber - I am so tire of squeaky voice Tedesco thinking he knows everything - Plus I'm tired of looking at his funny looking face - Give the public a break and have him stay home - Don't you think it's time Margiotta & Barber got together - I think the chair person of the Board should speak for the Board and not his puppet !!!!!!  Or maybe Margiotta doesn't know how to explain what's happening and how the proposed changes are suppose to help our children with their education !!!!!!!

I guess what's fair is

I guess what's fair is fair!

You have to listen to Tedesco's squeaky voice.

The rest of us have to listen to Barber's Hot Air.

We will just have to go with it.

Margiotta has been on the

Margiotta has been on the BOE long enough to know Barber's antics.

"honestly and intelligently discuss education in North Carolina"

NCSPIN proposes a constructive dialog, but the Rev will show up because a camera is involved.

Tedesco will be there for the dialog; the Rev will be there for the donations.
