It's now official that James Merrill is the new Wake County schools superintendent.
Merrill, the superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools and a former Wake administrator, was hired by the school board tonight on a 7-2 vote. Board members Deborah Prickett and John Tedesco voted no, saying they felt Clark would be the better choice.
A copy of Merrill's contract wasn't released tonight. But school board chairman Keith Sutton said that Merrill's salary will be $275,000 a year. He said it's higher than Tony Tata's $250,000 salary because Merrill is a veteran superintendent.
Merrill will Start Aug. 1 on a four-year contract. Sutton said Merrill will get the same 12-month buyout package that Tata had.
Corrected reference about Tom Benton not having been there for the vote.
