WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Heated exchange tonight between Wake County school board members Susan Evans and Deborah Prickett

Bookmark and Share

Some of the most heated moments at tonight's Wake County student assignment public hearing took place after it officially ended.

Normally school board members don't talk during the hearings, but after the hearing ended those in the audience demanded their questions be answered. Board members assured the crowd they'd hear their concerns.

In one of the more contentious exchanges after the hearing, school board member Susan Evans yanked the microphone out of board member Deborah Prickett's hand.

Prickett had asked the crowd for a show of hands if they were "satisfied" with the choice plan.

Evans, who could be heard muttering something under her breath as Prickett talked, grabbed the microphone.

"This is not appropriate," Evans said. "It's not the purpose of the meeting."

"You took the microphone away from me," said a surprised Prickett to Evans.

Board vice chairman Keith Sutton slammed his gavel to get things back in order, allowing Prickett to continue to talk about the choice plan.

yep

Same ole, same ole

Evans was totally out of

Evans was totally out of line. And Prickett was completely right. We were promised a 3 year plan, with review and modifications as necessary. If they are going to completely redo the plan, they should modify the choice plan to address issues for next year.

If anything,

I suggest you (anyone) contact the County Commissioners with your concerns - it can't hurt...

Also, letters to the editor - of course, they can edit your letter however they see fit (right?) - but you might get lucky and have all of your viewpoint printed.

A new low

Even for this board, the snatching of a microphone from another board member is inexcusable. It seems that Susan Evans feels she has the right to forcibly muzzle others when she dislikes or disagrees with what they are saying. No other way to put this --- she's an a--h-le.

Can you imagine what is was like for her kids dealing with that level of insecurity all the time? I think she needs to see a psychiatrist. Don't board members have to be mentally competent to serve?

44 min mark = the parents rebel

49 min mark = Evans assaults Prickett

Prickett should have smacked Evans

but good for her for being the bigger person.  However, she should file a police report.

*Good job getting a link up so quick and marking the hotspots sideburns.

Susan Evans should be thrown off of this board and not given ONE MORE FREAKING SECOND to ever have a say again when it comes to the children in this county. She's is pathetic.

How did you enjoy that show Gainey?  My guess is it only gets better.

As for Mr. Arrogance himself, he's taking notes and your comments into consideration. Doesn't that give you so much more comfort parents.

What a bunch of screw ups. The smart ones were the ones that didn't show tonight. Board members and parents alike.

What's the big deal?

Susan Evans is ENTITLED to do that stuff, isn't she?  After all, she's from GSIW and they know best.

I Saw..

The exchange at the meeting....Susan Evans was so out of line. She should apologize publically to Prickett and the rest of us in attendance. It is time to throw all of this board out....they act like children!
