WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Harsh words following school board vote on community schools directive

Bookmark and Share

The bad blood following Tuesday night's vote to scrap work on the community zone plan was in clear evidence among what had been the majority on the Wake County school board.

As noted in today's article, harsh words were exchanged, especially from board member John Tedesco. In the immediate aftermath of the vote, Tedesco approached Goldman and offered a handshake as he said “I’ve enjoyed our friendship while it lasted.”

“This wasn’t a win for community schools,” Tedesco said after the vote. “This wasn’t a win for diversity. This was a win for Debra Goldman.”

Tedesco accused Goldman of being out for the publicity, hence his earlier remark when he called her a "prom queen."

Tedesco said there was nothing he felt they could have done differently to keep Goldman’s support. He said the former minority members had “played her like a fiddle” to get her support.

“She’s not a swing vote,” Tedesco said. “I’m ready to be done with her.”

School board member Keith Sutton said he had conversations with Goldman over the weekend about the new resolution. He said he had drafted it with the help of board member Kevin Hill.

Sutton said that he hasn’t given up hope of restoring some elements of the old socioeconomic diversity policy, despite Goldman saying they’re still moving ahead with community-based schools. But for now, Sutton said Tuesday’s action was a first step.

“We wanted to slow down and halt the work of the assignment committee,” Sutton said. “As we heard from the people who spoke, what was going on was a trainwreck waiting to happen.”

Before the vote, Goldman stressed that she felt she was doing what was right by scrapping the zones being developed by Tedesco.

"I am doing what’s in my heart and my conscience," Goldman said. "This process isn’t working. We only have one chance to do it right. The zone model isn’t working."

I missed that part. If EI is

I missed that part. If EI is being phased out this year, then why is a discussion needed on EI vs. EVAAS?

That's exactly what Kevin

That's exactly what Kevin Hill said.

It is all Debra all the

It is all Debra all the time, don't you know...get used to things getting lost in the fray. If Debra ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. Her performance yesterday -- that's what it was, a "performance" --  was utterly disgusting.

Sutton and Hill can have her as far as I am concerned.  It will be just a matter of time before she screws them over too. It is what she does.

Now Woody I think you are

Now Woody I think you are out of line bashing Mrs. Goldman.  If she says she's concerned about creating more high poverty schools and tearing up communities, well dog-gone it we have to take her at her word :-)  This is the same family friendly board you've been praising for months.  I agree with one of your earlier statements  "we are in a period of cleansing  in Wake County". ;-)  We just started the cleansing by flushing JT's assignment plan.

And I care that you think I

And I care that you think I am out of line..Why?

If you think anythuing was decided last night, you're nuts. :-)

Do you think Goldman is going to all of a sudden stop flip-flopping?  LOL  Good luck with that. She's shown who she is.
