WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

H1N1 found in Wake school

Bookmark and Share

H1N1 has finally hit a school in Wake County.

School officials are reporting that there is a confirmed case of H1N1 in a student at Reedy Creek Middle School in Cary. School officials say the student is recovering at home and that crews will sanitize the school this evening.

Dr. Elizabeth Tilson, Wake County's interim health director, spoke to the school board on Tuesday about what would happen if H1N1 was found at a school.

Tilson said the school would not be automatically closed. Instead, she said it would be handled on a case by case basis.

People need to wake up to

People need to wake up to what is happening in our world from politics to economy it's a hot mess we're becoming a socialist society. You should call your primary care doctor for a swine flu shot that's your best bet.

That's scary

That sounds pretty scary, good thing they found it early before it spread. H1N1 isn't that easy to spread, require the person to be near the someone very close, or even have intimate actions to spread. There is no need to panic here.

And don't ever forget.....

Decent parents at the Reedy Creek schools fought hard over the years to reduce the numbers of F&R students and balance them with all the low number F&R schools in Western Wake. Evil Chuck & Eleanor finally saw the light last year and moved some nodes around. But evil is evil and after all was said and done, Chuck & Eleanor made Reedy Cheek schools the "alternate" traditional school for those parents who didn't wish to participate in their assigned MYR school. Now the F&R numbers are even higher than before. Pick your favorite word -- backstabbing or revenge.

Absenteeism?

It would be interesting to see what the absenteeism rate is today at RCMS after every parent got called yesterday.

I thought that H1N1 needed

I thought that H1N1 needed to be confirmed by the State Lab or CDC so I am guessing this announcement may just be a confirmation of sickness maybe a week ago and by now it is probably every where just from kids going to the mall, skating or the movies.

"unwanted excessive

"unwanted excessive long-distance busing " are the shorter route less contagious?  If every kid walked to school would that limit the amount of coughing and touching that goes on in a school?  I think blaming Dulaney for H1N1 is a little far fetched.

a busing epidemic.... here we come

Just Great. The bus'crazy Dulaney and old timers on the school board will deserve a lot of "credit" when their unwanted excessive long-distance busing and reassignment plans now spread this epidemic at the "speed of bus" throughout Wake County.

Want to know where the virus will show up next???
Every Direction! Just go study Dulaney's WCPSS assignment and bus transportation maps (nodes) for Reedy Creek.

What A Load Of Crap

Even if every single student at Reedy Creek lived in the neighborhood and walked to school and never saw a school bus....you can bet the ranch that once you map all of the myriad of places their parents go to work evey day that you'd pretty thoroughly cover a map of the TRiangle.   Much more so than ANY busing map.

As the parent of a Reedy Creek student I find your attempt to politicize this to be rude and offensive.  And not too bright, to boot.

I know you have to be a little worried...

but hopefully it won't spread.  Maybe they caught it quickly.  On Monday I heard that some elementary schools had some kind of virus going around with a high fever and aches.  I really wonder if that was this flu.  Good luck and I hope the rest of the kids stay well.

Thanks Mom!

I always wanted to sa that to one of the "moms" here....  ;)
