The Great Schools in Wake Coalition launched what appears, for now, to be a successful effort to help the Wake County school board retain control over school construction.
GSIW sent an action alert Wednesday night providing a sample letter for people to send to members of the House Government Committee. People were asked to urge the committee to vote against Senate Bill 236 or at least drop Wake from the counties affected by the legislation.
"Our county needs more synergy, not more division," GSIW suggests saying in the sample letter. "If this bill is passed then checks and balances that have been in place for years will be taken away."
Here's the action alert:
Our Last Chance to Remove Wake County from School Construction Bill
SB 236, Counties Responsible for School Construction, would allow county commissions to seize ownership and control of school property from local school boards--for no less than 10 years. Yet equipment, maintenance, and repair responsibilities for the same properties could remain with the local school district. Only local boards of education have the educational programming knowledge and requisite experience dealing with the kinds of factors that affect school placement and design decisions. The bill will be reviewed by the House Government Committee--TOMORROW.
We have learned that some of the counties included in the bill as it came over from the Senate will be removed and that others will be added.

Dear Members of the Government Committee,
I would like to ask for your support in defeating SB236 which is before Committee tomorrow morning. At the very least, please help us by removing Wake County from this bill. This bill will serve to only divide Wake County even further. Our county needs more synergy, not more division. If this bill is passed then checks and balances that have been in place for years will be taken away.
