Get ready for four weeks of heavy campaigning in the District 2 school board runoff.
As noted in today's article, Cathy Truitt expects to call for a runoff against John Tedesco. However reluctantly, folks who backed Horace Tart will likely turn to Truitt in hopes of staving off a complete sweep by the WSCA candidates.
"I'm hopeful that we can continue to talk with her about the need to continue to maintain diversity in our schools," said Calla Wright, president of the Coalition of Concerned Citizens for African American Children. "That's our glimmer of hope."
But Wright and school board member Keith Sutton will readily admit that they wished Tart had come out ahead of Truitt to make it into the runoff. They're trying to flesh out what Truitt's opposition to the diversity policy but support for diversity will entail.
"With Tedesco, it's clear where he is," Sutton said. "With Truitt, I'm not sure where she is."
Truitt could become a kingmaker if she wins and becomes the swing vote on the board.
It seems that supporters of John Tedesco have less hesitation to back him in a runoff.
"We're going to celebrate tonight and starting tomorrow bring the full weight of the WSCA to support John in District 2," said Joe Ciulla of the Wake Schools Community Alliance as the results came in Tuesday.

Return Mr. Esco to Enloe!
Wed, 10/07/2009 - 20:29 — RandyRockettRobert Escamilla stood alone against the entire WCPSS School Board except ONE member - Ron Margiotta. Mr. Margiotta proudly stood with Mr. Esco and the tens of thousands of Esco's supporters. Mr. Escamilla case drew national and ultimately international press for months. I'm convinced this and a few other toppled decisions brought down the election results last night. This is one for the books! Bravo to all those who fought the good fight! "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." -George Santayana
Right there with you....
Wed, 10/07/2009 - 10:07 — joybohamWhy is the evidence in the SAS report not enraging more folks? The children people - it is about the education of the children. NOT making a "school" look healthy so that more people and big businesses will want to move to the area. Let's just focus on the kids. Help the kids - and your schools WILL BE HEALTHY no matter what part of the county you live in. Because you know what - at seven years old...my daughter knows NOTHING about "socio-economic" diversity....
it will be up to us
Wed, 10/07/2009 - 10:45 — loriacIt will be up to us to get the word out. We will not be able to depend on the bully pulpit of the N&O or the news organizations that are owned by the 'Friends of Diversity'.
Thank you to Keung Hui - it's been said a couple times, but I appreciate that you do present the facts as they are. Pass this on to your superiors - YOU are the only reason I keep my N&O subscription. I want you to stay around, so I won't cancel despite all the tripe they print in the paper as 'news'.
Election Chatter - Diversity
Wed, 10/07/2009 - 10:07 — RMC10And still Ms. Wright the president of the Coalition of Concerned Citizens for African American Children and her glimmer of hope, by the name of her group - continues to fail to address true diversity as one occurring in the naturally diverse student population in Wake County, and wags the 60's tail of the black african american/white diversity for her measuring stick.
And diversity trumps
Wed, 10/07/2009 - 08:26 — SouthEastWakeMomAnd diversity trumps education yet again. Have Ms. Wright and Mr. Sutton bothered to read and understand the SAS report? Shouldn't they be more concerned about eradicating the tendency to deny academically qualified minority children seats in advanced math classes? That the data being used by WCPSS in their decision making doesn't present a true picture of the achievement gap?
Slowly banging my head against a brick wall.....
This Says It All Folks!
Wed, 10/07/2009 - 07:14 — JanisTangoI read this in the paper this morning and this says it all!
If Truitt were to prevail in a runoff, she could become the kingmaker
on a board whose other members would be split 4-4 on the diversity
policy.
Supporters of the diversity policy would have preferred
that incumbent Horace Tart finished ahead of Truitt to get into the
runoff, because they're uncertain about Truitt's bottom-line position
on the issue.
"With Tedesco, it's clear where he is," said school board member Keith Sutton. "With Truitt, I'm not sure where she is."
I'm sure she is trying to figure out what her position will be to ensure she wins! That's the scariest thing of all! I've followed her race with interest, but when I saw her at that 'Friends of Diversity' forum I realized that she didn't really know what her position is.
