WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Gary Pearce on why Republicans lost the school board majority

Bookmark and Share

Veteran Democratic strategist Gary Pearce is offering speculation on why Republicans lost the majority on the Wake County school board.

In this talkingaboutpolitics blog post on Monday, Pearce says a Republican friend told him that school board chairman "Ron Margiotta was an unintended victim of the Republican-run school board redistricting." Pearce writes that the majority gave in to board member Debra Goldman's demand that she get three heavily Republican precincts moved from Margiotta's district into her district.

"With those three precincts in his district, my friend believes, Margiotta would have won reelection," Pearce writes. "He would still be chairman and still command a 5-4 majority."

In this other Monday blog post, Pearce writes that a different GOP friend told him that "the Republicans were doomed from the start on this election for school board." The friend cites a lack of a message and underfunding, calls school board vice chairman John Tedesco "an embarrassment" and says "there just wasn’t much of a vetting process" on candidate Heather Losurdo.

On Ron Margiotta's District

I don't think you came blame Ms. Goldman for this.  According to Redistricting guidelines her district had to have had the largest influx of new constituents. She ended up expanding in all directions, and it assuredly made a difference in several districts.  Certainly the majority could not allow her district to move too far easterly and as a result more heavily Democrat.  So decisions were made.  Now on the other hand I do agree those three precincts would likely have made a difference, nor am I ready to say the difference would have been enough to maintain the seat with the unprecedented amount of cash being spent on the other side. That's not a criticism. Just an observation.

SO, Mr. Malone

Nice to see someone on the majority is finally admitting that party designation had a major role in how lines were drawn.

"certainly the current majority could not allow her district to more too far easterly and as a result more heavily Democrat. So decisions were made".

WOULDA, COULDA, SHOULDA...

...Chris Malone, please, stop the noise! Your majority's clocks got cleaned, and that's it. The Democrats had the manpower and the money to deal with every contingency, so it really came down to which candidate was better prepared to turnout their base.

Besides, your chairman, Margiotta, and vice chairman, Tedesco, got on WPTF and cried that your majority was doing such a "great job" that your supporters thought it was in the bag, and just didn't turnout. So to even bring Goldman into this now, especially after you were one of the main ones vowing to target her re-election bid a year ago when she voted against Tedesco full-idiot 16-zone plan, is beyond laughable.

Three more precincts would NOT have made the difference. The Dems would have planed for that.

Look, you're packing up your desk to run for your House District in 2012 anyway, so give it rest, will ya?

Are you serious?

You need to stop and take a breath before you let your emotions run away with you.  First I was defending not attempting to "bring" Goldman into anything. She was part of the point of the blogger.. Didnt you read it? Secondly if you read my comments you would understand I was doubting the precincts would make enough of a difference.  Some yes.. enough not sure.  Finally I agree with you that the other side covered every base, and I have said as much...  Now on a related point I breathlessly await Keung's run down and comparison of money spent on the race. It should be illuminating and illustrative.  But thats more for him than you.

Hmm, I attributed this

Hmm, I attributed this strategy move to Yvonne Brannon as it moves the nodes that feed into Mrs. Goldman's child's school under her mom's jurisdiction and could also allow Diana Bader to run against the Republican candidate when Goldman's current term is up.

Bader?

Remember the speculation about Margiotta winning against Jim Martin?  That would have applied in spades against Bader.

Bader/Margiotta

I thought the moves were to keep Bader from running against Margiotta.  I don't think Margiotta saw Evans coming.... and certainly did not take her seriously.  Are you suggesting Brannon had any direct influence on Shanahan and his tricky line drawing? Now that would have been a fun meeting to watch!

Well, he did look at the map

Well, he did look at the map the League of Women Voters (stakeholder) had put together and Y. Brannon did give the presentation and answer questions in regard to the map but I'm not privy to which components Mr. Shanahan used or discarded for his purposes.
