We've got new principals tonight at Garner High, Ligon Middle, Fuquay-Varina Elementary and West Lake Elementary.
Drew Cook was promoted from assistant principal to principal of Garner High. He replaces Mike Holton, who cited medical reasons for his departure.
Cook, who has worked as a teacher and AP at Garner High since 1997, will receive $97,167 a year,
Gretta Dula will become principal of Ligon Middle, replacing Scott Lyons, who is going to Leesville Road High. She has been principal of Wildwood Forest Elementary since 2006 and will receive $95,867.
Julia Smith will be principal of West Lake Elementary, replacing Mary Warren, who is now at Herbert Akins Road Elementary. She's an assistant principal at Sycamore Creek Elementary and will get $83,903.
Since Smith won't start at West Lake until July 1, Charles Langley will stay on as interim principal until then.
Steven Moore will become principal of Fuquay-Varina Elementary, replacing Franklin Creech, who is now at Banks Road Elementary. Moore has been an assistant principal at Timber Drive Elementary since 2006 and will now receive $83,159.

Wed, 04/01/2009 - 21:05 — KeungHui (author)It's going to take some time. Wake will have to advertise the position and hold information meetings with staff and parents. Depending on how long they think it will take, tney might name an interim principal.

What is the purpose of listing the salaries?
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 08:32 — MarvinSchwartzMr. Hui,
I noticed that for the first time you have printed the salaries of newly-named principals. While this is certainly public information, I wonder what was your intent in listing that information here when you have not done so previously?
The editors want salary
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 10:06 — KeungHui (author)The editors want salary information to be listed in print for the new principal and senior admin hires. It makes sense to list the info in the blog posts as well.
Yes, but why?
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 13:00 — MarvinSchwartzThanks for your response, Mr. Hui. But again I ask the question, why do the editors want this information included?
Yes, this is public information but is the salary of school administrators relevant to the fact that they were named in the first place?
Further, I question the consistency of the application of this editorial decision. In today's paper is also listed the hiring of a county attorney for Orange County, but no mention of that person's salary, nor of the assistant town manager in Cary who was promoted last week. Both of those positions are in the public domain as well.
I don't fault you, Mr. Hui, if you are following an editorial directive. I think there is an editorial motive given the looming budget struggles and that this is an effort to keep things stirred up to that end.
I'm not saying this information is entirely confidential (it is a matter of public record), but is there no reasonable expectation of privacy for these individuals? They did not negotiate this salary; they are paid on a pre-determined scale.
Are your editors as willing to have their salaries published? Or moreover, are they willing to release the names and salaries of those laid off to show how much money is being saved for McClatchy's bottom line? No, I didn't think so.
Holly Springs Princial

Holly Springs Principal
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 14:53 — SherryFrostIs the Principal position at Holly Springs open? I thought Luther Johnson had left on medical leave and there was an interim principal, but that Johnson was coming back. Is the job now open for hiring someone new?
