WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Four new principals named

Bookmark and Share

We've got new principals tonight at Holly Springs High, Davis Drive Elementary and Wildwood Forest Elementary and an interim leader at Carver Elementary.

Timothy Lee Locklair will become principal of Holly Springs High, replacing Luther Johnson, who left due to health issues. Locklair has been the principal of Apex Middle since 2004 and previously was a high school teacher and assistant principal in Moore County.

Locklair will receive a salary of $95,902.

James “Chip” Mack will now run Davis Drive Elementary in Cary, replacing the retiring Pat Andrews and becoming only the second principal in the school's history. Mack has been principal of Root Elementary in Raleigh since 1999 and will be paid $96,411.

Catherine Yanello was named principal of Wildwood Forest Elementary in North Raleigh, replacing Gretta Dula, who is now running Ligon Middle.

Yanello has been an assistant principal at Wildwood Forest since 2007 and will be paid $83,159.

Judy Dudley was named the interim principal of Carver Elementary School in Wendell, replacing Allison Baker, who resigned after being suspended over a “negative interaction” with a student. Dudley is a retired principal who has frequently been asked to fill in at schools.

Mr Johnson

As everyone as probably heard mr johnson passed away friday night at his house. He was such an awesome person/principal and he will be greatly missed. Mr Locklair has some big shoes to fill!!!!

TRADITION OF EXCELENCE WILL LIVE ON FOREVER! Rest In Peace Mr Johnson, we love you.

Sad news......

Mr. Johnson lost his battle with ill health and passed away over this past weekend. He will be remembered as HSHS's first Principal who established the Golden Hawks 'building a tradition of excellence.' Thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.

Holly Springs High - Luther Johnson, Jr.

Luther Johnson, Jr. , most recently Principal at Holly Springs High School, passed away on Saturday evening, June 26th surrounded by his family at home. He will be missed.

What happens at Apex Middle now?

We lost 1 asst vice principal and now the principal. What happens at Apex Middle now with the supposed hiring freeze?

The hiring freeze doesn't

The hiring freeze doesn't apply to principals. They are filling at least some assistant principal positions. A lot will depend on the state budget for the latter position.

I'm sorry for Mr. Johnson

I'm sorry for Mr. Johnson but a position was created for him in the district. What used to be a coordinator position - school to career - on a teacher salary is now school to career administrator. That is Mr. Johnson's new title. This occurred after WCPSS claimed no central office positions would be filled due to cuts. I don't know that Mr. Johnson is actually doing anything in this role or if he's on medical leave of some kind.

It is very discriminatory

It is very discriminatory for teachers, staff and assistant principals to be fired and not principals and school superintendents. If some groups have to feel the pain of the "so called" state budget crisis then all groups should feel the pain, INCLUDING PRINCIPALS AND SUPERINTENDENTS. They make more than teachers and their jobs are not as important in terms of the actual education of our children as teachers.

" who is now running" such and such school

"Running" a school?  Is that correct English? I think not. The appropriate phraseology would be "so and so, principal of such and such school" or "so and so, who is presently/the current the principal of....." No one person runs a school like a machine that turns on and off. Teachers are individuals with a mind of their own who teach students in classrooms within the school system which are administered by variously titled persons including principals, superintendents and other.  They are not run.

Time for a CHILL PILL !!

Time for a CHILL PILL !!

Prayers for Mr. Johnson

I'm concerned about Mr. Johnson. We had him briefly at Leesville Rd. Middle. Hope it's nothing too serious.

I am concerned also.  He

I am concerned also.  He was a great principal and a wonderful man.  If you read this Mr. Johnson, we are thinking about you!!!

He was pretty ill for a

He was pretty ill for a while, being in ICU at one point. He was able to briefly return to Holly Springs High but wound up leaving for a less stressful job in the district. Ramey Beavers has been filling in longer than originally expected as the interim principal.
