WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? Will the new student assignment plan be a hybrid of the last two models or primarily be a return to the use of busing for diversity? Who will replace Tony Tata as the new superintendent of the state's largest district? How will voters react to a likely request in 2013 to borrow potentially more than $1 billion to build and renovate schools?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Bookmark and Share

Former Wake County Commissioner Stan Norwalk has died.

Norwalk. 80, resigned last year due to poor health and to be near here his family in Kansas. Norwalk had lobbied for increased school funding during his three-year tenure on the board of commissioners.

Norwalk, who was also one of the founders of WakeUP Wake County, was a lightning rod, He often clashed with commissioners Paul Coble and Tony Gurley on a variety of issues.

Sad to hear that he passed

Sad to hear that he passed away. My thoughts go out to his family.

RIP Stan

Whether you agreed with him or not, there was no room for doubt that Stan was a true public servant without ulterior motives.  We could use more like him.

Chaboard, I agree with you

Chaboard, I agree with you 100%.  Stan was one of the wisest and most compassionate people I have ever met, who selflessly worked so hard for many years to make our community a better place for all.  I believe it was despicable how disrespectfully some people who disagreed -- like Cary Curmudgeon and others -- treated him on the now-defunct Cary Politics blog and on this blog, and like Tony Gurley and Paul Coble during Board of Commissioner meetings.  Wake County lost one of its finest citizens when he had to resign and move for health reasons, and it is terribly sad to hear of his passing.

Way to inject your brand of politics into this one

It's terribly sad that you couldn't leave it at just your condolences.

But not surprising.
