WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Final board meeting for departing members

Bookmark and Share

Today marks the end of an era on the school board.

This afternoon will be the final regular board meeting for Eleanor Goettee, Patti Head, Lori Millberg and Horace Tart. You can expect a lot of laudatory statements from groups such as the other board members, administrators and Wake NCAE.

One interesting question is whether the outgoing board majority will make one grand statement before the new board starts Dec. 1. For instance, the four departing board members in 1999 used their last meeting to help pass a largely symbolic resolution calling for teacher pay to be sharply raised over the next five years.

Today's meeting starts at 3 p.m. in the board meeting room, 3600 Wake Forest Road in Raleigh.

I think a simple "thank you' is in order.

When someone does a thankless job, with critics and detractors on all sides, I believe a gracious "thank you" is in order. We don't have to agree with them. My only question is, "Did they do what they thought was right?". If so, regardless of the outcome, I believe they have earned our respect and well wishes. In a democracy, the majority has the right to govern... now, the new board members will have an opportunity to deal with a different set of critics and detractors.   I wish them well, for the sake of our children.

How funny is your post!

NO a thank you is not in order if they leave us worse off and sufferibng.  too often in our democracy an uninformed uneducated, electorate does not vote or votes per party lines to the detriment of our society.  However, I digress, in the case of WCPSS, this was not the case.  The incumbents so mis-managed and caused hardship, inconvenience  oh did I mention worse test scores - evne though they kept presenting mis-leading data that tried to hide the true results? In this case, they were voted out of office (or chose not to re-run) due to the voteres being so fed up with how they managed it.  You are right about the critics and detractors- they were everyone.  Actually, funny to haar someone say this as supporters kept calling us the vocal minority!

I'm happy to amuse.

Sometimes I think I take myself and causes I champion too seriously.  I have a "me vs them" mentality, where anyone who disagrees with me, becomes a source of derision.  I forgot the lessons my mother taught me too many years to recount... to practice civility, in and out of season.

At their final school board

At their final school board meeting in 2003, two outgoing members of the CMS board, (one who had declined to run again and one who had been defeated), made vicious, divisive final speeches. Both predicted dire consequences for CMS as busing ended. I thought at the time that this was extremely inappropriate--only encouraged dissension within the community and certainly did not increase support for schools. Their predictions, of course, have not come true. As yet we haven't heard an apology.

Good Point!

So watch out for the quotes from Millberg and Head, the 2 recipients of the "poo on 'em and leave" award, this afternoon!  Parents should get rain coats and hip waders out for what I'm sure will be their last jabs at us!  Oh yes, they leave a disaster behind, that's all those 2 ever wanted to do anyway, but doesn't it sure feel good that they are going, going and soon to be gone!  Oh yes it does!

1 last meeting!

1 last time!!! I am thinking about all the mis-mgmt, upheaval that this board has caused and the deliberate misleading data and statements that they have given to the public in an attempt to justify their actions. I can not imagn causing more chaos and inconvenieince if I were to deliberately try (Not to say this board was dliberately trying!!) So tempting to go to this board meeting and voice my happiness that this is their last day.
I believe strongly in karma and I beleive the future holds a lot of pain and suffering for a lot of the current board members (and let's not forget former chairwoman!!).

Amazing

Not one blogger here calls this poster out.  If I had posted "I believe the future holds a lot of pain and suffering for the WCSA members" I woould have been raked over the coles.

Horrifying statement.

Meet the Press- WOW

On Sunday, Sec. of Ed Arne Duncan, Al Sharpton, and Newt Gingrich were guests discussing education overhaul. Yes- Sharpton and Gingrich on the same side of as issue.
You can watch online- approx 20+ minutes of great discussion.

Sharpton and Gingrich

are both members of the Education Equality Project. I've posted information on them before.

The group advocates for education reform and innovative solutions (like lifting caps on charter schools for one) to help close the achievement gap. Mr. Sharpton has been surprised by the resistence from some circles within his own party. One of the biggest sources of resistence - the NEA.

Let's see - a bi-partisan group advocating for change toward using innovation solutions to raise achievement for ALL students and address the achievement gap because the status quo situation had failed to do that and doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is the defination of insanity - sounds very familiar...

"One interesting question is

"One interesting question is whether the outgoing board majority will make one grand statement before the new board starts Dec. 1."

Maybe they will acknowledge the mandate of the voting public and show respect to the newly elected members by simply walking quietly into the sunset.

Shoe throwers?

Was Muntadhar al-Zaidi on hand to throw his shoe at the departing board? Not that I'm advocating shoe-throwing...

...

"This afternoon will be the final regular board meeting for Eleanor Goettee, Patti Head, Lori Millberg and Horace Tart. "

That's the best thing I've read in a long time.

Amen!

Good riddance parent and truth haters!
