WakeEd

The WakeEd blog is devoted to discussing and answering questions about the major issues facing the Wake County school system. How much will the new Democratic majority on the school board do to undo the changes made by Republicans since 2009? How will the new choice-based assignment system work now that the socioeconomic diversity policy has been eliminated? How will Superintendent Tony Tata lead the state's largest district through more budget cuts and possible layoffs? How will the board respond to growth and the school construction program?

WakeEd is maintained by The News & Observer's Wake schools reporter, T. Keung Hui. While Keung posts information and analysis on the issues, keep us posted on your suggestions, questions, tips and what you're doing to cope with the changes in Wake's schools.

Filing period begins for Wake school transfer requests

Bookmark and Share

It's t-day, or transfer application day.

Letters will go out today to parents letting them know their child's assignment for the 2009-10 school year. You can also begin filing transfer requests today. (The form should be online at some point.)

The letters could come as a rude shock to the nearly 1,200 students who are being sent to a year-round school or modified-calendar school after previously not giving their consent. These are the folks who didn't successfully apply in February for a seat at a traditional-calendar school or magnet school.

In addition to transfer requests from the former opt-out students, Wake could see a spike caused by people reacting to the three-year reassignment plan that was adopted in February.

What is the timeline from

What is the timeline from this point Mr. Hui? When will transfers be approved or denied?

We'll have a better handle

We'll have a better handle tomorrow when they discuss the transfer process during the committee of the whole meeting.

Year Round School Calendar

What I found interesting/strange was that in our letter which came home yesterday, we only received a copy of the traditional school calendar for 2009-2010, even though we are going to YR for the first time in July.

Is it typical that only the traditional calendar gets sent home with the letter or was it just an oversight in our case? While I know when our YR track starts and I know how to get a copy of the YR school calendar at http://www.wcpss.net/Calendars/2009-10/09-10-year-round.pdf, I hope others new to YR have a way of getting this information too.

I thought the same thing

We were assigned to YR and only given the Traditional calendar as well.
