A new poll from Public Policy Polling has the three Democratic candidates for county commissioner leading their races and poised to flip control of the board.
In the closest race, the poll shows Democratic challenger Stan Norwalk with 49 percent of the vote. Republican incumbent Kenn Gardner is at 40 percent. The poll has an error margin of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
One thing to keep in mind, which isn't mentioned in the press release, is that PPP President Dean Debnam gave $1,000 to Norwalk's campaign.
Debnam, who like Norwalk backs slow growth, notes the attack ads being waged by Realtors against the Democratic challenger.
"The realtors' attacks against Stan Norwalk aren't working so far for two reasons," Debnam said in the press release. "The first is that there's too much going politically right now for a County Commissioner contest to break out of the clutter. The second is that voters agree with Stan Norwalk on the issues he's getting attacked on. Our polls have shown time and time again that Wake County voters think growth should pay for itself, as Norwalk does."
Additionally, the poll has Democratic incumbent Harold Webb with 52 percent to the 37 percent for Republican Venita Peyton. Democratic incumbent Betty Lou Ward has 53 percent to the 38 percent for Republican Larry Tilley.

Funny....
Thu, 10/30/2008 - 12:19 — WuptdoFunny, no mention of Mr. Norwalk and his Political Action Committee, "Citizens for Truth in Elections" from back in the day. In Cary, they were called the "Grumpy old men!" I wonder why?
tsk-tsk

PPP Poll always favor Dems
Thu, 10/30/2008 - 10:04 — kmisegadesPublic Policy Polling ALWAYS slants results towards liberals and Democrats. Deduct 10 points from the Dem and give it to the Republican and you probably get closer to reality.
Look at their list of clients. Good luck on finding any Conservatives here. PPP data is near worthless.

Wed, 10/29/2008 - 15:01 — AngelaWI feel a fever coming on for BOTH my MYR students at our polling place school.....Fortunatley my older Traditional school student will ALREADY be home to "help" take care of them.... *whew* that's a load off my mind.

Wed, 10/29/2008 - 19:57 — Anonymous (not verified)I am thinking about keeping my MYR child home. I am very concerned about how things will stay under control and the traffic. I am not feeling comfortable about this.
Why no one is calling WCPSS out on the carpet about this is crazy. Wait until all these pissed off people are double parking and parking on lawns at these schools that are polling sites.
And God forbid the principals actually open their mouths and actually stand up for their teachers and students and PARENTS... oh God, never the parents. Everyone just keeps their mouths shut and hopes for the best. :)
I must say that our
Thu, 10/30/2008 - 06:04 — AngelaWI must say that our pincipal has done what she can to ensure safety at our MYR polling place....she tried to get WCPSS to close us, no go, she tried for extra staff, no go, Traditonal teachers have the day "off", tried for extra guards, no go, AT FIRST, she's kept on it and now has gotten the go for my security. the PTA will ask for volunteers to patrol the halls, the children eat in their classes, etc. So there is as much precaution in place as she was able to get......and I thank her for it....still doesn't mean that my two MYR students are feeling "ill" already..
We have had no such
Thu, 10/30/2008 - 08:02 — Anonymous (not verified)We have had no such organization at our school. Good for you AW!
What I don't understand is why the MYR and YR principals didn't all unite as a group and stand up for themselves. Do they just not care to do that?
Well, yeah, my child will be ill on Election Day and come to think of it.. Memorial Day as well.

Wed, 10/29/2008 - 14:48 — rr77rr99Speaking of the elections....
WHY WHY WHY are YR and Modified year round schools on a two hour delay? What, WCPSS couldn't "predict" there'd be an election this year for POTUS? Give me a break.
My child is in year round and I am contemplating not sending my child to school that day. I fear having all those people in the building coming and going while my child is in the building... and let's not even get started with the traffic snarls this is going to create.
Who is the genius behind this? Traditional schools have a teacher work day . I can't understand why there has to be school on Election Day during a POTUS election cycle....
We all know during local elections you're lucky to get anyone come out to vote!
Just wondering, that's all. I'd like to know the reasoning behind it if someone has the answer.
Plus, I don't want my child Kids Voting with the class. My child already told me that the other children in the class are not voting for the person my studnet wants to vote for and my student is "afraid" to cast a vote while voting with the class.
And by the way...Kids Voting was not set up for classrooms of kids to go and vote. The purpose of the Kids Voting was to share the experience with a family member/parent.
